Another artist that has baffled me lately, and she is completely separate from my comment above: Bjork! Her new album is absolutely terrific; just a stunning record, all the way through!
Does anybody else think so?

Yes, great band! Thanks!
Recently, I have been enjoying punk records in the vain of The Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, NOFX, Rancid; also, some more hardcore and iconic bands such as Conflict, Crass, Nomeansno. They all had huge fanbases, and cult-like followings, very different from those mentioned above.
In fact, they were the opposite of progressive. They took the ideal twenty-minute, classical inspired, and good-spirited utopian fantasy, and they substituted in it in the place of astonishing rebellion. This rebellion is what appeals to me as of late, not because I have a similar mindset (I am prog, and I mean that in every way possible), but because I just finished reading 1984...
Take away all the groundwork for the punk genre - the spirit, be it - and you have the style; influenced the sound of music forever, and continues to be highly influential... This style can be used as one element in the experimental band... Hence, Cardiacs are formed!
Can any of you recommend more bands that combine progressive and punk music?
Other desired combinations: Prog + hardcore Prog + thrash metal Prog + grindcore
All these combinations are completely contradictory, but elements can be blended together, with the stripping of the genres. I am looking for any groups that do this blending with beauty and precision.

Another band I have been enjoying a lot lately is Anglagard. Their sound is very comparable to Ys, by Il Balletto Di Bronzo. Their synth work is awesome.

^^ I'm really glad to hear that. Swans is definitely very unique. I actually haven't fully gotten into them yet. The first few albums they released are quite challenging experimental metal. The more recent albums are a very eclectic form of post-rock and I have no difficulty with those. Albums starting with Soundtracks for the Blind, especially the recent trilogy of albums To Be Kind, The Seer and The Glowing Man are my favourites. Filth (the one I'd suggest you to go for in case you haven't heard it yet) and Children of God are also must-haves. | Thanks! I actually just finished watching a breakdown of their discography, by the YouTube channel deepcuts. I thought it was a very worthwhile guide... highly recommended to any other newbies. Also, I heard that the first two were the hardest to listen to by a wide margin, and that they are separate from the rest of the discography. I would like to give them a go tomorrow.

THE band I should have suggested before anything else based on your list: Swans. |
OK. This band is absolutely brilliant. In every way. Honestly, I absolutely love everything I have heard from them; their work is original, and very extensive. I can see myself listening to them a lot, a lot, a lot in the future. One of my new favorite bands. Absolutely just so beautiful and scary and captivating - their music is one of a kind.
And if the above paragraph seems unconnected and illogical, it's because right now I am in an utter state of awe. I wonder whether I will be able to utter a full sentence in the next week or so... Words do not do justice to their awesome music!
Yeah, I think I will stop now. I can ramble all day, but I have too listen to more of their music, and maybe just fall asleep to it... because it's pretty late here and I have been listening to Swans all day... |

Doomsday Afternoon will wear out soon, but for the time being, it is a rewarding experience. I actually thought that the Wobbler album was more unique... I don't know, Doomsday Afternoon just seems... kind of bland? (at least when compared to the older masters)
Frances The Mute... Well, I heard it before, but I actually did not listen to it in a long time, so I was surprised by how it blew me away. The album seems to get better and better with each track, and the vocals are actually very interesting on this release; it is hard to imagine any other vocals to go along with the incredible instrumentation on this album.
Yet to hear the other releases, but I am still really loving that Wobbler album.
And it provides a very nice contrast to the terribly different works by Swans and Godspeed You! Black Emperor!

Nice to see that Riverside have made it to your top-5. If you haven't checked out Anathema yet, you know what to do. Also, Airbag is a reasonable choice if you hate Roger Waters. Alright let's drop some names.
Alfa Mist - Antiphon (Nu Jazz/Jazz Fusion with spoken word passages and tiny prog hints, drums remind me of Gavin Harrison) Doves - Lost Souls (warm and dreamy Indie-ish rock) National Health - Of Queues and Cures (Canterbury masterpiece) Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere (straight out of the oven, full prog madness) Air - Moon Safari (smoothest downtempo in history, maybe ever)
|
I have listened to all of these, some repeatedly. Wobbler is absolutely great, on so many levels! And Antiphon, I love that album!
If you have anymore recommendations, I would love to hear them. |
Glad you liked them . Wobbler is AOTY for me. If you're into more hard-hitting stuff check out the two Royal Blood albums, the latest Sahara Surfers album and the latest Amplifier album (as well as The Octopus). All of them are very entertaining, without being revolutionary. Similarly there is Kasabian,
one of my favourite bands. Very different sound than the rest, start
with their third to see if you're into them, continue with the first
two. The Mars Volta's Frances the Mute is amazing (but chances are you have already heard it). Phideaux's Doomsday Afternoon is pretty similar to Wobbler's album, a bit more unique. And for something way different than the rest, try Sunset Mission by Bohren & der Club of Gore.

Wow, this Krokodil album is really good.
Thanks YESESIS!
I was just browsing through the albums I listed at the basis of the thread, and I realized that I forgot to mention some of my favorite Italian pop. Riccardo Fogli; Pooh; Adriano Celentano; Matia Bazar; Il Volo...
Also, Mike Patton's Mondo Cane is awesome! And Laborintus II! Great stuff!
