THE band I should have suggested before anything else based on your list: Swans.
"Larks' tongues. Wrens' livers. Chaffinch brains. Jaguars' earlobes. Wolf nipple chips. Get 'em while they're hot. They're lovely. Dromedary pretzels, only half a denar."

And I bet you're not just saying that because you're from England. Wink

Anyway, I agree. Great band.

Nice to see that Riverside have made it to your top-5.
If you haven't checked out Anathema yet, you know what to do.
Also, Airbag is a reasonable choice if you hate Roger Waters.
Alright let's drop some names.

Alfa Mist - Antiphon (Nu Jazz/Jazz Fusion with spoken word passages and tiny prog hints, drums remind me of Gavin Harrison)
Doves - Lost Souls (warm and dreamy Indie-ish rock)
National Health - Of Queues and Cures (Canterbury masterpiece)
Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere (straight out of the oven, full prog madness)
Air - Moon Safari (smoothest downtempo in history, maybe ever)

Yeah, I have tried out Anathema. I will look into all the rest - especially Antiphon and Moon Safari! They sound really interesting!

As for Riverside, their whole discovery is very appealing, but their last two albums and the whole Lunatic Soul project... The more quite, experimental ones are what really make them so awesome.

Airbag is great! Really helps fulfill what Pink Floyd used to!

Godspeed You! Black Emperor is going to become one of my absolute favorite bands. I have listened to Luciferian Towers and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven so many times... Just really beautiful stuff.

I am actually really familiar with Goblin and Alphataurus already! I love the heck out of those two bands!

Also, I definitely listed IQ. They were one of my first modern prog bands. Definitely.

You should listen to Bjorn Riis, the guitarist of Airbag. Wink

And some other bands from Norway: Gazpacho, Ossicles and Soup.
