Another band I have been enjoying a lot lately is Anglagard. Their sound is very comparable to Ys, by Il Balletto Di Bronzo. Their synth work is awesome.

Not sure why I haven't thought about them earlier but you should definitely check out Don Caballero. They have really intricate guitar work and awesome drumming. Don Caballero 2 and For Respect are really heavy, perhaps the two you'd like the most. Otherwise, What Burns Never Returns and American Don are easier listenings.

Recently, I have been enjoying punk records in the vain of The Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, NOFX, Rancid; also, some more hardcore and iconic bands such as Conflict, Crass, Nomeansno. They all had huge fanbases, and cult-like followings, very different from those mentioned above.

In fact, they were the opposite of progressive. They took the ideal twenty-minute, classical inspired, and good-spirited utopian fantasy, and they substituted in it in the place of astonishing rebellion. This rebellion is what appeals to me as of late, not because I have a similar mindset (I am prog, and I mean that in every way possible), but because I just finished reading 1984...

Take away all the groundwork for the punk genre - the spirit, be it - and you have the style; influenced the sound of music forever, and continues to be highly influential... This style can be used as one element in the experimental band... Hence, Cardiacs are formed!

Can any of you recommend more bands that combine progressive and punk music?

Other desired combinations:
Prog + hardcore
Prog + thrash metal
Prog + grindcore

All these combinations are completely contradictory, but elements can be blended together, with the stripping of the genres. I am looking for any groups that do this blending with beauty and precision.

Another artist that has baffled me lately, and she is completely separate from my comment above: Bjork!
Her new album is absolutely terrific; just a stunning record, all the way through!

I respect her a lot, her albums are very interesting though not always my cuppa.   Her Big Band period was neat.   Did you like Sugarcubes ?
