None are GREAT, but I like IQ more than the other two bands.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

From these 3 bands, the only album I have heard is The Road of Bones... but I really loved that one. Too bad you couldn't get into it. However, I didn't think you would like it's concept either, anyway...
However, perhaps the one you could check out next is Transatlantic. I do love The Whilrwind... and in general that must be more positive music. |

Really close between King's X and IQ. I really like King's X's lyrics and that heavy hard rocking sound. IQ as I said in another poll just seems to get better with age as their last three studio albums are arguably my favourite from them.
Saw King's X open for Porcupine Tree once in Toronto and I think they had the volume up to 11 as it was really loud.

I like Saga, but IQ are on another level.
The Road of Bones Subterranea Ever The Wake are all solid 5* albums. The Seventh House Frequency Dark Matter Tales From the Lush Attic are all top 4* albums. Nomzamo and Are You Sitting Comfortably are less consistent, but still are worth listening to. And their live DVD Stage is sensational.

Never heard of 'King X' but IQ is one of my favourite bands of all time.. Saga can be a hit and miss with their albums. Will have to look at how King X sound.

Anyway, all kidding aside, King's X is a kick in the ass with those guitars and have a Christian message to a lot of their songs. You really can't go wrong with them.

That's why I would recommend Transatlantic... well, the Christian message (I had the impression you would be interested in spiritual themes already, but if you like particularly Christian stuff, then Neal Morse is the man for you, as well as projects in which he may be involved), not the guitars... for I didn't really check out any King's X to be able to say if there's any similarities (though, at least on "The Whirlwind", there's some nice sounding heavy guitars... though not really reaching the status of metal). |

Tight battle for second place between King's X and Saga. I've teased some folks on here already about saying that IQ is better than Saga but, so far, I've found both them and King's X far easier to get into than IQ. Starting to question my prog fandom a little bit here. But no, I still love classic Genesis, classic Yes, ELP, and Gentle Giant. So.. I think I'm still ok lol. I hope so.

IQ, perhaps the best 'neo-prog' going right now..............imho Saga and Kings X are a bit too mainstream in their sound for me.... if you are into prog rock.
As I said on the Saga thread they sound like Styx to me............Kings X is more about hard rock/metal imho.

Yeah, this was admittedly a tough sell(on here) for either of these fantastic bands to win against the more consistently prog sounding IQ. But... I did locate a poll right on this very forum where IQ lost against Fish era Marillion. That made me feel a little better lol. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12374&PN=1

Well, that's not very surprising. Marillion (specially Fish era) are the number one Neo Prog band... the one that first comes to mind when the sub-genre is mentioned. I guess IQ is the second one. |

Not keen on King's X. I loved Saga when they were new but was a bit disappointed about where they were going (and I developed in totally different directions). Still love some stuff on their first few albums. IQ are a good band and more consistent than Saga in my view, but I rather respect them than love them. Saga gets the vote ever so tightly/
