Sanguine Hum used to be Antique Seeking Nuns with exactly the same people. It seems to have worked for them though I prefer the ASN material.

While not quite the same band, Giles Giles & Fripp changing their name to King Crimson was probably a good idea...

I came to say the exact same thing...almost word for word Jimmy Ellis deserves a mention. Former Elvis soundalike changing his name to Orion helped him immensely (tbh it wasn't his idea). The fact that Elvis had died shortly before and that Jimmy wore a mask also helped things along nicely - with a huge part of his fans believing he indeed was Elvis and that he'd undergone facial surgery to garner some form of privacy. |

Well there was that time that Emerson Lake & Palmer changed their name to Triumvirat...but they quickly came to their senses.

... and then they made Love Beach. However, their alter's album Illusions on a Double Dimple, is more or less on par with Brain Salad Surgery.

Never quite understood why Jefferson Airplane became Jefferson Starship, and then just Starship. I was never really a fan but it seems like their music got suckier with every name change.

According to Ian Anderson, the original line-up had such a bad reputation that they had to change their name on a weekly basis. Jethro Tull was the one that stuck.

Chicago Transit Authority changed their name for fear of being sued. I guess it didn't do them any harm. |

Listened to IOADD first time on friday - Quite catchy in parts - but I don't think it's in the same class as KE9.

Climax Chicago Blues Band, from Staffordshire, apparently under pressure from the American band Chicago, changed their name to Climax Blues Band. It is a snappier and more appropriate name, but how it affected Chicago I cannot see. The original Nirvana and Beat also changed their names (ridiculously) to suit American record companies/ bands. The latter gained smug satisfaction at their own self-importance I suppose.

In 1977, for their album Pompeii from that year, Triumvirat changed their name to New Triumvirat for contractual reasons. The use of the previous name was being contested.

Organisation changing their name to Kraftwerk for their "sophomore" album, which today by many is considered their debut....and to even more people means absolutely nothing as they think Kraftwerk started with Autobahn
The name change had no effect on their success methinks but rather the shift in style towards a more melodic and at the same time mechanical sound did. |

^^Triumvirat's first three records are the best progressive rock on the planet. Illusions On A Double Dimple, their finest, is an incredible listening experience.

Yes, it was the first time somebody called and asked for the band to come back and play, and that was the main reason why they stuck with Jethro Tull.

Their early stuff with Grace Slick was classic, masterful stuff then yeah.....I guess it was a good decision so that they didn't soil their reputation under the same name

Considering that Crimson is practically Fripp's solo work under an alter-ego, yes
