It could easily fit into a prog metal compilation, but not in a generic 70s/80s heavy metal comp. I voted yes.

I'll go with heavy prog....like their board category.
There are some metal elements in that song but I have never thought of them or their music as metal.

Hmm....prog metal by today's definition, but not your heavy metal of the late 70s. Far too complex and twisty compared to what was out there at the time.

Not really... more hard rock prog, or heavy prog, or whatever. I think the guitars are not yet heavy or metal enough. Though I can imagine it easily being played in a truly metal fashion.

A lot of early Rush is prog metal to me with later material being heavy prog, so yes.

Not really, IMHO. More like heavy prog.

I have no problem calling it metal.

Is Cygnus X-1 metal?  No.  Could Cygnus X-1 have influenced later prog metal bands?  Yes Wink

I think Cygnus X-1 is much more metal than most songs on the album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

No, Heavens no! It is just part of one of the greatest duos of back-to-back prog ever produced.

No it's not, but you can clearly hear parts that influenced groups like Dream Theater, Opeth, even Voivod :)

I saw Rush in 77 at Glasgow and they were a standard (but really excellent) hard rock band with prog influences, but not metal.

I don't think Rush have ever been metal or even prog metal.
