Air Born is definitely Camel, and The Afternoon probably The Moody Blues. No idea on Phoenix though.

^ Uriah Heep. Magnum had nailed them all down in a previous post.

Yes, Phoenix is Wishbone Ash. The Afternoon - The Moody Blues. Bird of Prey Uriah Heep. Also thanks SO much for reading through the list, because I expected people to look at the first 10 songs and skip the rest, it is a pretty darn long list, but I am appreciative of your observations on it.

That's a great idea. I will attempt that, but the prog artists not on this list have not been listened to enough by me. I have a favorite song from unmentioned bands like Steve Hackett, Soft Machine, Mike Oldfield, Marillion and Focus (but for most of those bands I have only heard one song.) I certainly won't exclude newer prog bands like IQ, Spock's Beard or Porcupine Tree (whose song Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is the best prog song of the 21st century), but generally the newer prog bands don't have that perfect "old" or "nostalgic" sound, and thus don't my musical taste (no offense to fans of new prog bands.)

^ Just curious about your age range(if you don't mind). Are you old enough to have been a fan in the 70's? I can't imagine many younger fans knowing about Uriah Heep or Wishbone Ash. :P

Haha, nope. I'm 17 I just know my 70s music through online research and Youtube. My dad started me off with Pink Floyd (even he was not old enough to buy music in the 70s, he was born in '67), but now I have a much broader prog music taste than my dad because ironically, I am more interested in 70s prog rock (including obscure bands) than my dad, my introducer of this type of music.

^^^ It's great to see some younger people still love 70's prog.
My son (15) and my daughter (12) both love classic rock as well as some prog. (Yes, Rush, Floyd)
I hope they pass it on tho their kids one day. Keep Rockin"!!

Very good solid list although I would have No 47 and No 26 as my top two!
I would also include a lot more Neo Prog such as for instance IQ - The Last Human Gateway and Marillion - Assassing and probably some  Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But not Here and Trains.

You'd probably be interested to read through the list of the top 300 prog tracks, according to other progarchives members, that I put together last year:

I didn’t expect Atom Heart Mother in the top 50, let alone in the top 10!

Disappointing the complete absence of Marillion and Flower Kings.

Fantastic list, OP. The only thing I'd change is I'd move In a Glass House up a bit but that's about it Big smile

I won't lie, it's probably right behind CTTE for me.

Great idea, a top 100 songs list.  I'll have to think about this and update when I'm done.  This'll be fun, as there are several songs I can think of that I adore, and will make it to the list, but in terms of the albums they came off, they may not have made it to my top 100 albums list.  Thanks for the fun diversion idea.  I'm on it...

Ok, these are not in any specific order - just "favorites" that popped into my head.  I'll try not to repeat bands.  First 25 down, 75 to go.  I won't be able to complete this for several days, as I'm headed out of town and will be busy... but it's a start.

1.            Camel – Spirit of the Water

2.            Jethro Tull – To Cry You a Song

3.            Mike Oldfield – Taurus II

4.            Riverside – Escalator Shrine

5.            The Alan Parsons Project – What Goes Up

6.            Soft Machine – Song of Aeolus

7.            Steve Hackett – Hammer into Sand

8.            Kate Bush – Under the Ivy

9.            Porcupine Tree – Heart Attack in a Lay-by

10.          Tangerine Dream – Baryll Blue

11.          Vangelis – See You Later

12.          Triumvirat – Mister Ten Percent

13.          Rush – The Necromancer

14.          Barclay James Harvest – Ra

15.          Lunatic Soul – Wanderings

16.          Magma – De Futura

17.          Minimum Vital – Song a Cinq

18.          Supertramp – Just a Normal Day

19.          King Crimson – Starless

20.          UK – Caesar’s Palace Blues

21.          Ayreon – Waking Dreams

22.          Nine Horses – Atom and Cell

23.          Ambrosia – Lover Arrive

24.          Holger Czukay – Ode to Perfume

25.          Brian Eno/David Byrne – Regiment

That's a good list of classic prog songs. Well done for giving it a go. I think I'd find many of your choices in any list of mine - when I get around to doing one, myself. Some additions of newer material perhaps, and tweeks in the order, but that playlist would keep me happy for a few days, definitely.!

Fair enough, the songs are in no particular order, still it warms my heart to see a total outsider track like this listed as number 1 (Camel is not an ousider band, granted). I love that one, though had never expected to find it in a list like this.
