Which of these early alternative rock pioneer bands do you favour the most. both had their good periods in the 80s of post punk and arena rock flavours. Both heroic and tragic conotations to the bands, in various ways.

Are you ready to rock to these pulsating driving beats of INXSU2REM

I'm going with REM. I think that all three are/were overhyped, but I have caught myself listening to REM at times and thinking "wow, that's pretty cool."

Never been a big fan of INXS. The other 2 were great in their early years but less so later on. I'll give U2 the nod for everything up to Achtung Baby.

REM hands down. Excellent band.

U2 beyond their first four albums are just embarassing IMO. INXS never did anything for me at all; a rock band for people who didn't like rock music.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Hmm...I like several albums by REM and U2 both....never really listened to INXS much.
I think the early U2 work up to and including Joshua Tree has got some very good songs...after that they took themselves too seriously and became 'pop rock stars' with a message.
Same for REM I suppose...the early work is interesting but later on they became self conscious imho and also became 'pop rock stars'.

One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

REM easily.
Murmur is one of the best 80's albums for me.

A highlight for me in INXS defence is a song called Don't Change, an outstanding song. It has a power very few songs have. To me in level of quality like the Police super duo Syncronicity I and II

Early U2 would win hands down. Sadly, after Bono believed his own hype, REM were fair superior but never quite to that early U2 peak. INXS never appealed to me.

REM (especially the 1st 5 albums)...INXS had 1 great song (The One Thing) & U2 is the most overrated band in history Wink

Yeah that song and "This Time" are INXS songs I can hang with. Not really into the other stuff I've heard, but I never delved too deep into their catalog.
REM for me, the first two albums are fantastic, which is unique in that "mumble-jangle" usually doesn't translate into "greatness", but they sure did it (The Church did it too with Heyday but they weren't as mumbly). I also like Automatic... especially the songs bookending the album.
U2 has some great songs as well, and thanks to smart production usage, their 80's music doesn't sound as dated as most other huge 80's acts. But REM was cooler early on (I find Out of Time to be godawful except for maybe "Texarkana" which is okay)

R.e.m. easily. Fables of the reconstruction is one heck of an album and quite frankly, I think they have very high lowest points and some really intresting sounds.

U2 I guess for Achtung Baby and Rattle & Hum - the only two albums of theirs I still spin. I used to listen to a lot of REM back in high school but am somewhat indifferent nowadays. Funny how most prefer their early material ( I think it is probably down to college radio in The States.) I much prefer UP and New Adventures In Hi-Fi tbh.
INXS I don't know anything from maybe except for a song that sounded uncannily close to an 80s Jim Morrison singing something about never tear us apart....oh yeah and the frontman snatched up one of my favourite danes of the time in Helena Christensen.
