Both made 2 albums with Strawbs: Wakeman made Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios and From the Witchwood, and Weaver made Grave New World and Bursting at the Seams.

Whilst Wakeman is one of the virtuosos of the keyboard and caused some temporary resentment when he jumped ship to join Yes, I can't but think that he tended to somewhat dominate the band, whereas Weaver's more restrained contributions fitted in rather better.

Over to you.

Blue Weaver. I prefer his work on the two albums he made with Strawbs.

Weaver's work fit better with Strawbs' symphonic folk sound.  It doesn't hurt that I also think that the two albums he played on are both better than the 2 that Wakeman played on (which were still good).

Love Wakeman but Blue Weaver's mellotron on Grave New World is incredible. For the Strawbs, it's Weaver for me.

Wakeman is the better keyboardist, but Weaver is the better fit for the Straws.

Weaver definitely a better fit with the Strawbs than Wakeman - where he tended to over-dominate the band at times. However, both had their moments and obviously young Rick hasn't been too shabby since he left them!

Give me Witchwood any day of the week to the other albums, so it's Wakeman for me.

There are many underrated players out there, Blue Weaver among them.  With Strawbs he definitely fit better with their over-all sound. Rick was also interesting with them,  but at times he did and does tend to over-play, and that really does not work as well with the Strawbs ensemble approach.

Hard to say because Wakeman days with Strawbs were very much still in the "folk phase" of the band; imagine what would be if he was among them at the "progressive phase".. :)

Weaver, although Wakeman did play some killer piano on Blue Angel on Cousins' 1st solo album Two Weeks Last Summer.

agreed, one of the things that makes this my favorite version of the song, apart from an unofficial live acoustic version I have somewhere
