I think they are very overrated in the world of metal music.

I wouldn't know but I like them and that's all that matters to me.

I like Thrash but Pantera (and Sepultura) do nothing for me. Go figure.
I’d say they are a bit on the overrated side.

Anyway, all of these things are subjective, honestly. There is a reason they are where they are now, at the top. That should not be dismissed, and if you don't like them, that does not mean they are overrated because again, they are where they are for a reason.

Absolutely not. As a musician I am blown away by the amount of detail they juggle together. Maybe you just don't get it. One of my all time favorite metal bands and I've probably listened to thousands at this point

All metal is overrated these days. Most of it just bores me.

Meshuggah’s debut, Contradictions Collapse, is an amazing tech-Thrash album. Highly underrated........just sayin’

Overrated is an understatement. It's the pinnacle of lowest-common denominator metal IMHO. AC/DC of thrash. The whole "we're southern" thing never did it for me either.

Exhorder > Pantera.

^ do you guys actually listen to the music? First of all they invented groove metal (look it up). Secondly their music was incredibly diverse starting with Cowboys From Hell and became extremely experimental on Far Beyond Driven. There is not one album in the universe that sounds like that one. The Great Southern Trend Kill continues the experimental side but they always maintained unique melodic drives with extraordinarily technical interplay between the instruments. Any guitarist could learn how to play an AC/DC song in like 10 minutes. It would take you years to master a Pantera song with Dimeback's solos.

If you only listen to lyrics and are turned off by Phil Anselmo's role as singer, then i can totally understand why many don't like Pantera (or if you have only listened to the first four glam albums), but to say that they are overrated isn't quite digging deep enough into their music to understand their popularity amongst musicians themselves.

Except that it sounds like a Metallica clone! If you analyze it closely you can pick out each riff ripped off from Masters of Puppets. Albums like Catch Thirtythree and Nothing, however get me excited!

I like Metallica, Voivod, Opeth and Stone. There is enough new metal to me. Never listened any whole Pantera-album, just some songs, but any of what I have heard haven´t ever make me want to listen whole Pantera album.

These polls are vastly overrated if anything. Is Pantera overrated is basically just code for: I don't like Pantera yet many do and I think they're wrong, and it'd be cool if I could piss some of them off in the process...though without painting a bull's eye on my back.
Just one of the many euphemisms for 'gong against the grain' in today's online music universe: I don't like X classic artist therefor he/she/it must be overrated. When opinion trumps opinion.

Pantera is the most influential band on nu-metal, subgenre of metal music which sucks.

^ never heard that before but even if it's true has nothing to do with their own merits

David, I agree. I could start a thread about Nursery Cryme being overrated because it doesn't do much for me but instead I'm simply happy that others can find joy with it even if I dont.

Nursery Cryme is overrated, and Genesis didn't "click" and find their sound (stylistically) until "Fountain of Salmacis" hits Wink.

I still don't find them musically adventurous despite owning all of their records and giving them a more than honest shot. Not being negative, they just don't do it for me! I'm also mature enough to understand other people feel the exact opposite, and there's nothing wrong with that.

oh yes, I find them overrated. They got two solid albums 0 Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power, they've never topped those and got predictable.
