Labels & genres are a necessary evil. They make discussing music more convenient, and that's why we have them. I'll avoid just about any unfamiliar band labeled symphonic, and that saves me time when I'm listening. I do like modern just as much as classic. For instance, I feel the same way about Emerson Lake and Palmer as I do Opeth. I don't understand the tremendous popularity of either band in prog circles. My perspective is that of a listener, not a musician, though I'm blessed enough to "sing" in my church's choir .
I am the funkiest man on the planet!

So what? I can say the same to the new music lovers that they miss out really much old great music. I donīt believe those who are excited of this day music have heard all the great albums of sixties and seventies.

I am still open to all great music no matter when itīs made. Itīs just these days itīs very hard to find great new music. I believe in 2000 there has made even more music as before. Youtube, soundcloud etc. is full of it. Same time mainstream companies have concentrated to music that sells. To me it was recommended tons of new music that is said to be great. I have found maybe 1% it great. So why do I waste my time to try to search great new music, when same time I still have many old records supposed to be great that I havenīt listened yet? Of course all the new old music I have listened is not great, but I rather listen good music with old great sounds than new music with new, mostly horrible sounds. Also, I havenīt ever been disposable music comsumer. I want every now and then listen my old favourites too.

I think there is just not enough time all the great music of the world, at least if one has as large music taste as I have.

Nice quote!

Personally I prefer the freshness of the newer bands, the stuff prior to 1973 just sounds tired to me (I know I'm in the minority here with this opinion....). I do try to keep an open mind / ears and occasionally try to sample some of the old recommendations that keep coming up here and progressivears but it doesn't do it for me.

Classic Prog will always win. However, if you refuse to listen to the newer stuff then you're truly missing out on some damned fine music.

If you don't check out new bands and music, you're not being very progressive Cool

Like others have said, there is plenty of modern prog I like but I'll choose classic as my favorite

I'll take "classic" prog any day, but I also enjoy the modern bands. Some of them make me yearn for the classics, though.
Welcome to the middle of the film.

I've given new prog quite a chance, but except for Marillion, I stick to older prog and older prog groups that still put decent albums.

Agree. Can is one of the bands I recommend that any prog fan listen to at least once. If only for Jaki Liebezeit's brilliance at the drum kit.

I'm starting with Monster Movie and working my way forward. I'll be at the above albums in a few hours!

Did you have a nice journey? Is this band awesome or what?

Not bad at all, honestly. I took a break after Future Days which is obviously the most up my alley. Will be listening more for sure!

To me Can is greater than Genesis or Yes, specially the period when Damo Suzuki was in vocals.

There has been discuss about how new prog isnīt that great as the old one. More I am worried about, how classical, dirty Rīn`R seems to disappear totally. Same also a good blues. Maybe this is a wrong place to talk about this, but I donīt have any interest to go any "Rock" or "Blues"-forums.

This is a bit like comparing "classic" classical music to everything since.  Did classical music ever see the likes of Bach, Beethoven or Mozart again?

Some damn fine music was written and performed since, but those three really nailed it, much like Yes, King Crimson, and Genesis.

I've seen King Crimson's recent comeback shows twice...drop-dead amazing.  None of the new prog comes close IMHO.  I've seen a bunch of them - Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, etc.  Some great musicians, but the compositions are always lacking.

So..is this thread about liking classic prog over modern prog.....the difference in retro sounding modern prog rock over modern prog rock with a different style or....if modern prog rock should have it's own category...?
Or all of the above...?

;)
