Surprised to both hear about this and that it appeared so late on the Archives here.  A terrible, terrible loss.  He was not so often in the spotlight of the Moodies but there is no mistaking a Ray Thomas song.  His voice, flute, and presence were openly secret treasures.  His contributions seem minimal at first, but time and many listens made me appreciate him more.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

He could well have played the most famous flute-solo in the history of rock music.
(or was it California Dreaming?)

Wow, you guys are a little late here. Lol. Oh well, better late than never.

Big MB fan here. Unfortunately I only saw them once(in 1988). Anyway, while Ray might not be mentioned in the same breath as Ian Anderson and Peter Gabriel I enjoyed his flute parts for the most part and his singing too. RIP Ray.

Ray Thomas – This portrait is my tribute to this fantastic guy from a fantastic group (The Moody Blues of course). To me Ray was the guy who could write and perform some of their most “twee” songs (Dr. Livingstone I Presume, For my Lady…) and most grandiose (Legend of a Mind, Eternity Road…). I love em all.

This is a shame to read.

Oh wow. I didn't have any favorite Moody Blues-member, bur I really enjoyed his voice and his solorecords are amongst my favorites.

I will play them in dedication to him.

My boat sails stormy seas
Battles oceans filled with tears
At last my port's in view
Now that I've discovered you

Thanks for the music, Ray.
