You old romantic, you! Clearly a labour of love (if you pardon the pun!) Some great songs in there - wouldn't know where to start - but might be a interesting project over the next few months. Who says prog rockers don't appreciate songs about love, rather than black holes?!

Thanks so much for this list. I really like such lists, as they give me clues to things I haven't heard yet.

As for love songs among the music here on PA, one of my favourite songs, and it was written as a love song, is Robert Wyatt's "Alifib". Both the version on 'Rock Bottom', and the solo-with-piano demo version on "Solar Flares Burn for You", are amazing.

I really think it is a love song. Actually, it sounds to me like it is a marriage song, or a commitment for life song (with that special person). I mean "All in sight of seeds of Life with you".

You could say that about a lot of songs in this list (e.g. Dance on a Volcano), depends on your interpretation I guess.

I think most of Yes songs are love songs. Jon Anderson is just a messenger of love.

Anyone mentioned Todd Rundgren?? His tune ‘The Verb, ‘To Love’’ . Unreal ballad, especially live Utopia versions when Roger Powell includes his Mini-Moog solo in the middle. Probably my favourite ballad, ever.

The tune ‘Stay’ by Pink Floyd (Obscured By Clouds). Dunno if it’s Prog per se, but it’s a lovely tune.
Devo have done a few. but they are so skewed that they’re unrecognisable as ballads.....

I think songs have the best lyrics when they're a bit ambiguous and left open to interpretation.  The same song several months or a year later will have a completely different meaning to be based on my frame of mind at the time.  It's like there are many facets buried within the words that will only reveal themselves to you at the right moment.  That's powerful.

So this isn't a 'this is a love song' list, so much as it's a 'this is a song about love that had a very deep meaning to me at the time that I heard it' list.

Also there's quite a few that aren't love songs at all, but are to me about some of the growing pains that I had to go through.  Is this relationship going to work out?  why did we just hurt the other person?, why did we have that fight?, or whatever.  All are meaningful whether painful or not, and part of the growth of love but not necessarily a love song.

Incidentally I also have a couple of prog song lists going that I could also post here.  One is called 'criers' and the other is called 'raw truth' - I think they're both pretty self-explanatory.

I'm not sure how Tom Sawyer got in there to be honest.  There's probably going to a few other outliers in the bunch, as I've been throwing songs in the playlist for some time and I never really intended to share the list publicly.

For me, Trilogy is a breakup song not a love song.

Incidentally, I just made the Spotify playlist collaborative, so feel free to add any songs that you feel are missing.

I am surprised "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc is not on the list. one of the first songs that comes to my mind when thinking of love songs.

and then there is a song that is not really a love song, more a song about craving for love, but nevertheless I always think of it as a love song. sounds a bit strange, doesn't it? I am talking about this one:

Interesting list ....though imho many of those are not what I call 'love songs'.......
'Wish You Were Here' by Floyd..? So would that be Waters writing a love song to Barrett,,,?
