Just what it sounds like; what's your personal favorite track from this seminal Gentle Giant record?

This isn't easy for me, as I really, REALLY enjoy several tracks on this one. River and The Boys in The Band, along with Dog's Life are constantly stuck in my head. If I had to choose one track to exemplify the magic of this record, it would have to be The Advent Of Panurge.

Go!

"The Boys in the Band" with "Panurge" and "Raconteur, Troubadour" close behind.

This won't win but I'll go for A Cry for Everyone, just such a kick in the ass. Tremendous album.

Knots, Boys in the Band and Advent of Panurge.

I like 'A Cry for Everyone', and 'Think of Me with Kindness' the best. With only one vote, I chose the former

That would also be my top 3 - today, anyway.

As for my vote, I had to go with Knots. That song is madness incarnate! Everything about it should be going horribly, horribly wrong. The whole song is balanced so precariously on the fine line between complexity and chaos, but somehow they pull it off and the whole thing just works wonderfully.

Glad I'm not the only one who's like "Boys in The Band...WAIT...PANURGE IS VERY DYNAMIC!" LOL

That song encompasses a ton of GG's style.

.....so does Boys In The Band, so does Raconteur, so does River etc. Even the ‘ballad’ Think Of Me With Kindness is exquisite. I simply adore this album.   In fact, I’m so ‘lost’ these days, I obsess over Devo and Slayer, Kajagoogoo and Gorguts. I just.........dunno ? I’m truly messed up.......

You can never be too shy shy about listening to Gorguts "The Erosion of Sanity" and "Obscura"! Wink

^ Oh man, you know this stuff ??   God, I love Opeth so much, and I do love Sade too. Just random things I’m spilling out here. But I truly get into each and every band I love.
I could ramble for ages.......

Advent of Panurge, easily.

Pretty consistent album though. No weak tracks, and the only GG album I can listen to end to end without feeling irritated.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

River

...the groove JP and Kerry establish between the verses
...the smoking Gary Green doubletracked guitar "duo"
...the Ray and Gary violin/guitar hook
...Derek's oblong vocal with Kerry's obtuse organ in the verses

Appropriately ending the album with a bang. There's a reason they used River to conclude this masterpiece, Octopus.

Yes, this is one of my favorites as well! I LOVE Phil's lyrics and vocals here honestly, some of my favorite he's ever done with the band. I also love how he/Derek call-and-response with the second half of Gary's lead; so classic!

Agreed !   River could only be an ‘ending’ track !!!! Perfect ending to a perfect album.

And here I was thinking I'd be the sole vote for River. NiceCool

River for the thrilling parts with reverse cymbals and voices, along with keyboards and vibraphone.
