I thought we already had a conversation thread on Russian prog, but I couldn't find it.  

Russia has such a grand history of music that I would think they had a lot of progressive musicians & bands!  However, Igor Khoroshev of Yes is the only one who comes to mind. 

I found this one on a Facebook Jazz-Rock fusion page....I find this performance to be exhilarating, particularly since I love the music of my hometown band "Chicago!" 

Please feel free to comment on this group and Russian prog in general!

To be honest the only Russian lp I know and have in my collection is 'Equinox' by Aquarium (Аква́риум; often stylized as Åквариум). Perhaps not 'prog' but a very diverse and eclectic sounding band who (from what little I know) were a very long lived and influential band. Apparently they played the Royal Albert Hall in 2008! In many ways its mix of Folky influences mixed with new wave and psychedelic sounds reminds me very much of Super Furry Animals 'Mwng' lp

Well, there's Vespero, the kings of modern space rock, who are from Astrakhan. And a number of other good contemporary bands on the RAIG label.

I'm quite fond of the sole album by Sepsis, A Liturgy of Madness.  Sort of like The Magic Band trying to improvise a Yes album after doing too many mushrooms.

Then there's Horizont who put out two albums in the eighties. Sounded a bit like a cross between Yes and OMD as far as I can remember.

b) check out the Leonid & Friends video I posted.   Those guys play the material PERFECTLY!  

I've been writing to the band & will see if they have any original material to send.  Leonid is the bassist & band leader.

Well I'm sure that the whole Soviet Union thing put a bit of a damper on Russian prog bands up until relatively recently. But fortunately it seems that Russia (as with the rest of Eastern Europe) has been having something of a renaissance in new progressive talent popping up within the past decade. As far as Russian bands go, I think the most famous would be crossover band iamthemorning, who I've never actually listened to but I know have quite a handful of well acclaimed albums here on PA. 

Some other bands from Russia that I quite like include:

Kaula Spanda (Psychedelic)
Pandora Snail (Eclectic Prog)
Roz Vitalis (Listed under RIO/Avant-Prog, but they've ventured into a whole bunch of prog styles over the past 15+ years)
Whalephant (Eclectic Prog)

All of these bands have quite a rich palette of sounds and have put out some very emotional music. Definitely recommended!

Not Russian, but one Ukrainian band that a friend of mine likes is Karfagen. They recently released a new album to high acclaim. Personally, not as big a fan, but you will probably like it.

Only band I know is Autograph, here´s their wiki sites:

I'm curious about that!  I was in Romania in 1979, when it was firmly Communist under the rule of Nicolae Ceaucescu (alarming with all the armed police).  I was in a tour bus, and I heard "Awaken" by Yes on the radio!!  

I was also in Communist Czechoslovakia in the 1980s, when Gorbachev was instituting "Glasnost" in the USSR...I saw much graffiti for bands like Metallica and Judas Priest, and thought to myself "...hmmm, I wonder how long Communism can last?"  Answer was not long!  

No doubt, the Iron Curtain prevented high-quality musical instruments from reaching the hands of willing musicians, but I think that some interesting music was crafted, not unlike music during the post WWII Kraut Rock movement.  I bet there are some real gems to be found!

Russia actually is responsble for making one of the rare modern progressive albums - like in genuinely progressive. Check out The Gourishankar's 2nd Hands for proof...but whatever you do don't pick their newest album.

I'd lve to sprinkle this thread with a few vids here and there, but I can't be bothered with the amount of katja I'm getting today

Yes, that Gourishankar album is good as is the Pandora Snail one.
I had high hopes for Karfagen after their first CD but the second one turned into lift music and I haven't listened to them since, maybe I should?

They can really play I'll give you that. Tight and energetic....and maybe it's because I am not that familiar with Chicago, but to me the music sounds like the stuff Paul Schaeffer did for Dave Letterman on the late show
