Bent Knee - Land Animal

Crossover Prog

Taking up residence in the top-10 two years running comes Boston based Bent Knee. Their 4th album, Land Animal, continues to establish the bands library with diverse compositions and uncompromising musicianship punctuated by Courtney Swain's unforgettable singing.

"... another masterpiece of truly progressive rock music from these young masters of 21st Century art..." -BrufordFreak, PA Collaborator

#8-t

Roger Waters - Is This The Life We Really Want?

Crossover Prog

At 73 years of age, Roger Waters presents his first album in 25 years. Both gentle and dark in composition, his political angst filled vigor is ever apparent in this 2017 offering.

"...Roger's voice is in charismatic and commanding form, and the fifty-five minute set is oddly quite accessible.." -Aussie-Byrd-Brother, PA Special Collaborator

#8-t

Jordsjø - Jord

Symphonic Prog

Oslo duo Jordsjø fly into the top-10 with their 4th LP length offering. Deeply rooted in the sounds and textures of prog's classic, symphonic era, Jord presents an impressive set of retrospective compositions.

"...the Anglagard influence is obvious with a symphonic Prog/Folk Rock style. The songs are well crafted with gorgeous melodies displayed around the flute, the delicate guitar lines..." -rdtprog, PA Special Collaborator

#7

Agusa - Agusa

Psychedelic/Space Rock

Continuing the robust Scandinavian representation among this year's top albums comes Sweden's Agusa. Their self-titled release is framed by traditional folk with incursions of 60's style psychedelia. A highly organic affair.

...This is feel good music and who isn't into some great sounding flute and organ with lots of wah-wah guitar..." -Mellotron Storm, PA Prog Reviewer

#6

Thinking Plague - Hoping Against Hope

RIO/Avant-Prog

U.S. based Avant rockers Thinking Plague are now pushing 40 years of their emphatic and poignant brand of sonic surgery. Many bands have claimed to have written the "soundtrack to the Apocolypse", but Mike Johson's band seems to do it with every release. Hoping Against Hope continues that tradition with more quasi-chamber rock madness.

"...Stunning and utterly unique THINKING PLAGUE continues to dazzle as they effectively build upon what they've done before yet with the paradox of doing so in both logical and illogical manners..." -siLLy puPPy, PA Collaborator

#5

Mike Oldfield - Return To Ommadawn

Crossover Prog

Mike Oldfield gives a nostalgic revisit to his 1975 classic, Ommadawn. Presented in 20+ minute movements, the music is reminiscent of the original, but not entirely self-referential. A beautiful adventure.

"...this splendid recreation is pure ear candy of the highest order, restrained yet highly melodic with a distinct Celtic vibe..." -tszirmay, PA Honorary Collaborator

#4

Deluge - Grander Oceanarium

Symphonic Prog

Maryland's Dan Britton is the force behind Deluge Grander

. This year's offering, Oceanarium, is a fantastically eclectic adventure. Brilliantly textured in a way that makes the listener suspect they may actually be in an octopuses' garden. Woven complexity and unconventional instrumentation drive this selection straight into the top-5.

"...Due to the variety of sounds and instruments, one doesn't always know what to expect around the next coral reef or valley in the sea floor, which makes the album consistently interesting and enjoyable..."' -kev rowland, PA Special Collaborator

#3

Big Big Train - Grimspound

Crossover Prog

It has been a prolific couple of years for Bournemouth's, Big Big Train. Their 2016 release, Folklore, which came in at #9 for last year's contest, was followed by 2 releases in 2017. The later release, The Second Brightest Star can be seen above in a comfortable #29 spot. Sandwiched in the middle comes and forging its way into the #3 spot Grimspound, the band's 10th full length release. Punctuated by David Longdon's not-completely-unlike-Peter Gabriel vocal stylings and multi-instrumental skills, the album is brilliant and clear.

"...They are very polished, very skilled musicians, and their compositional skills and instrumental arrangements are of the highest quality and grade while their sonic renderings of music are always just shy of miraculous..." - BrufordFreak, PA Collaborator

The 2017 Prog Archives Collaborator's Runner-Up

Accordo Dei Contrari - Violato Intatto

Jazz/Rock Fusion

Bologna, Italy's Accordo Dei Contrari present a highly eclectic style of primarily instrumental jazz/rock with their 4th studio release, Violato Intatto. The album is packed with music. Not just from the aspect of its 73 minute duration, but from moment to moment. At its core one can draw comparisons to classic '70's fusion, particularly in its instrumentation and organic recording texture. They are however not afraid to venture into the free-form and get downright dirty at times. A brilliantly enjoyable album.

"...Every twenty seconds we can hear a different style and just as you start guessing what the influence might have been the mood changes again and there they go in a new direction. What a ride!..." -Quinino, PA Special Collaborator

...And The Prog Archives Collaborator's Album of the Year!

Wobbler - From Silence To Somewhere

Symphonic Prog

Skåle!!! Grab yourself some Akevitt and celebrate a gold medal for Norway in this year's Prog Archives Collaborator's Album of the Year. With 6 years passing since their previous release Rites at Dawn, Wobbler truly "sticks the landing" with this year's album From Silence To Somewhere. Firmly rooted in the classic sounds of '70's-era prog, not limited to singer Andreas Wettergreen Strømman Prestmo's comparisons to Jon Anderson, Wobbler has the ability to fuse contrasts in dynamics and composition seamlessly. A worthy champion! This was not a close vote either. #1 almost doubled the ballot points of #2.

...I have heard this album many times and each time it dazzles my senses...It certainly deserves masterpiece status as it pays homage to classic 70's Prog, crosses Prog rock borders and delivers it wrapped up in a new package... -AtomicCrimsonRush, PA Special Collaborator

"...WOBBLER have undoubtedly created one of the most satisfying progressive rock experiences of the year and possibly of the decade as they impeccably delivery the goods without missing a beat..." - siLLy puPPy, PA Collaborator

Thank you to everyone that voted!

Here is the complete score list. Voters were asked to provide a list of 20 albums. 20 points awarded for first place, 1 point for twentieth. You might notice some blank spots. Those were places that albums may not have been formatted for the tallying app to recognize and showed up as duplicates. The duplicates were manually tallied. I was not motivated enough to eliminate the spaces and reorder. Did not seem terribly important that an album would go from 211th to 195th.

Awesome piece of work Ian!

No surprise about no. 1 I guess, but very nice to see some less established names making it into the top 10.

I noticed a tiny glitch, The Knells are listed twice at 125 and 144.
Soldato of the Pan Head Mafia. We'll make you an offer you can't listen to.

No Steven Wilson in the top 10? This must be a first LOL!

Anyway, awesome job indeed! Really love this new layout.

Excellent work, nice to see Mike Oldfield and Thinking Plague rated so highly.

No surprise about no. 1 I guess, but very nice to see some less established names making it into the top 10.

I noticed a tiny glitch, The Knells are listed twice at 125 and 144.

That would put them at 60. There was a formatting issue were a couple lists didn't carry the band over with the album name. I thought I caught them all. Ju seems to have sneaked by as well.

There was also the issue of the 3-way tie at 49th place which completely threw the table off balance. The way the forum software handles spacing tables it doesn't like when the borders from one row to the next don't line up. Notice Major Parkinson is all scrunched. Results my very from browser to browser as well.

Ulver and S Wilson are waaaayyy too high on this list. :p

It is also strange to see so many things I voted for represented above 50.

But well done Tappy!

Excellent work compiling what turned out to be an excellent list. Really liking the format, too.

Noticed a couple of repeat entries. Kant Freud Kafka at 209 and 245. Probably due to the accent on the i. Lunatic Soul at 59 and 212 (second entry forgot the d at the end of Fractured), but that would put them into top 50.

Also Unreal City at 17 and 225 (second entry has only one m in Frammenti).

Surprised (but pleased!) to see Bent Knee did so well.

Accordo Dei Contrari and Agusa have been in my bookmarks for ages, I still need to give both a proper listen.

Thanks everybody. I was really inspired to dress things up a bit by Adam's MMA list last year. And I thank him for indirectly pointing out that I was way overthinking how to embed a table into the forum.

So I went back and looked at my master lists and verified that the top scores on the above final list for Lunatic Soul and Unreal City were the combined scores and adjusted placement in the standings. I just forgot to erase the lower entry. Actually, Unreal City sticks out in my mind because the album title was spelled wrong twice. I erased one of them but not the bottom one, but verified that 17 was their final position. KFK wasn't coming close to the top. A shame since they were just outside my top 20. Beautiful album.

And really, just too many amazing albums this year. I listened to more albums this year than I probably did in the first 3 decades of my life.

Yes. RIO/Avant was well represented this year. Was really hoping Cheer-Accident would crack the top-10. So close. I blame Trump for that since he caused Roger Waters Angry to make an album. Right?

However I noticed a few blanks in your complete list...

And i couldn't L'Albero Veleno - Tale of a Dark Fate, for whom I voted

Great job, Ian ClapThumbs Up!

2017 was a great year. Lots of good prog albums turned compiling this year into a list a hard job. Three albums stood out in my humble opinion, and I find them at 1, 3 and 4! I cannot remember such a thing has happened before. The same goes for finding five albums I mentioned in the top 10.

My list (for anyone interested):

1. Big Big Train – Grimspound (3)
2. Deluge Grander – Oceanarium (4)
3. Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere (1)
4. Jordsjø – Jord (8-t)
5. Cast - Power and Outcome (80)
6. Dean Watson - Sum of Parts (45-t)
7. Il Tempio delle Clessidre - Il-Lūdӗre (72)
8. Unreal City - Frammenti Notturni (16-t)
9. Nooumena - Controlled Freaks (105-t)
10. Djam Karet - Sonic Celluloid (97)
11. The Tangent - The Slow Rust of Forgotten Machinery (16-t)
12. Maxophone - La Fabbrica delle Nuvole (39-t)
13. Jean-Pierre Louveton - Le Livre Blanc (230-t)
14. Steve Hackett - The Night Siren (239-t)
15. Discipline - Captives of the Wine Dark Sea (21)
16. Hamadryad - The Black Hole (256-t)
17. Big Big Train - The Second Brightest Star (29-t)
18. Roger Waters - Is This the Life We Really Want? (8-t)
19. PBII - Rocket! The Dreams of Wubbo Ockels (284-t)
20. Damanek - On Track (116-t)

Steven Wilson does...not win AOTY? What is this madness???
Nah we all knew Wobbler would take this easily. Probably the finest Yes album since the 70s.

Great work Ian. I know how much effort this takes, so thank you very much
