Which bass guitarist do you prefer more??

I prefer Mike’s playing up to 1973 - and Chris’ playing from 1973 onwards. If that makes any sense ??

Chris! Both have used my favourite bass (Rickenbacker) but Chris used it more the way it should use!

Squire's simply one of the best bassists ever. Mike's really good, too, but come on... Squire!!

Chris Squire > everyone else you can possibly mention for me!

He's the #1 reason I picked up the electric bass. Rutherford is good, Shulman is close, but SQUIRE!

Chris Squire by some distance. Mike Rutherford was more of a supporting guitarist in the very early days, with acoustic, 12-string guitars etc. rather than bass. Only later did he focus more on the instrument.

Rutherford is an amazing musician. He's rhythmically ahead of most, and I value his simplicity most of the time. I've been learning a ton of Gabriel-era Genesis on bass (Supper's Ready is my personal goal to conquer).

Squire was basically playing lead bass MOST of the time; his instrument was a core element to YES' overall sound. The first time I heard Tempus Fugit it was like the guy was reading my mind! That bi-amped tone on "Roundabout" is legendary. Arguably the best bass tone and execution ever comes from Squire.

A kind of question that shouldn't be asked. Rutherford is good, Squire is the bass.

Squire.

Rutherford was great in the 70s.
I wonder if anyone will vote against Squire.

Two of my favourite bands for decades. One favourite bass player. Very few can contest Chris Squire, and Mike Rutherford is not one of them.

Both.

The are both excellent musicians with a style and sound that works with the music they play. Can't pick a fave.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Rutherford’s playing on the Genesis ‘Live’ album is practically at Squire’s level IMHO. Great Ricky tone.

It seems quite obvious that Chris Squire is going to win this one.

Get ‘em out by Friday boasts technically demanding bass line. Not easy to play at all.
But no, I didn’t vote for Mike !!

I actually love Rutherfords big chunky sounds---and think he could play similar to Chris if he wanted to but didn't;t want to----but Chris as someone said played it like a lead instrument but could also play funk so Squire.
