So far there's only one 2018 release I'd listened to, and that happened last summer (I'm friends with the band):
Recently I got a bit disillusioned with the new music, so I've been avoiding 2018 releases for this reason. But hey, it's almost Spring, guess it's time to check what's up - maybe I could find a couple of good releases out there for myself. Please share! |

Is the new Aksak Maboul any good?

The only things I've listened to from this year (that is a fit for this website) is Vantomme's debut and Zappa's Roxy Performances, both are quite excellent. Looking forward to the Elephant9 disc that's upcoming.

The last Mother Turtle, II, was excellent in my book - and listening to Zea Mice now I think it's going to be at least equally strong. Thanks for the tip. I just dropped the band an email to see if they are planning on a CD release. Will post the reply if they get back to me. Edited by Mascodagama - March 06 2018 at 15:02 |

^ Heard back from the band - no concrete plan for a CD release, but under consideration. So I bought the download.
Tip of the hat to the good Dr. G. Bamsen, who turned me on to these guys a while back. Edited by Mascodagama - March 07 2018 at 01:39 |

It's an archival release of live material and demo's. I got it mainly as a completist of that era of the band but it stands up very well. I like it a lot, very pleasantly surprised. |

I found this one a little disappointing outside of the first track she released (The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra), which I loved. I'll have to give it another listen at some point, it seemed liked most of the album was just paced a bit differently so I may have gone in with the wrong expectations. |

I'm not a huge progressive metal head however, Seyminhol- Ophelian Fields pings my metal sweet spot.

The Wrong Object was great. I assume this band is a spent entity at this point (at least in terms of releasing material)?

Just picked up Sonar with David Torn - Vortex, they were excellent at ProgDay last year & I really like the way Torn's experimental guitar sound works with Sonar's tritone minimalist grooving. On first listen it's very good.

Palm's Rock Island has been my favorite so far. Math rock/progressive pop in a whimsical Animal Collective meets James Ferraro funhouse mirror.
I also love Jonny Greenwood's score for Phantom Thread and what I've heard from his score for You Were Never Really Here is really cool as well. I have been wanting to listen to Dead Magic. I didn't even know she was in the database. If you like Anna von Hausswolff, it's worth checking out Chelsea Wolfe who also explores goth and a bit of heavy music through an ethereal wave lense. I'm also eager to check out that Keiji Haino + Sumac record. The trailer for it is pretty heavy and crazy. For the noise rock/noise/free improvisation fans: |

Does Torn provide any freakout style guitar or is he much more a part of the sonar cloth?

Really excited about the new Elephant9 release. They haven't let me down yet.
How's the new one Ian? Krautrock jazz galore like Silver Mountain or have they changed it up a bit? I really dig their latter albums where there seems to be a greater sense of dynamics mixing in oozing calmer psychedelic sections, where Reine especially fits like a sonic glove. |
