Apparently Kavus Torabi has a solo EP coming out shortly. I’ll be all over that.

Just picked up Sonar with David Torn - Vortex, they were excellent at ProgDay last year & I really like the way Torn's experimental guitar sound works with Sonar's tritone minimalist grooving. On first listen it's very good.

Does Torn provide any freakout style guitar or is he much more a part of the sonar cloth?

He doesn't dominate, it's more ambient experimental layered on top. He gets screamy in parts but not excessively so. I find a very well balanced mixed of their divergently different style.

Thanks. I've always wished for intermittent crazy guitar bursts in Sonar's music, so I was hopeful Torn would oblige. I'll get a preview of it before I buy (hopfully) but assuming it's not total assbags I'll probably buy it at some point.

How's the new one Ian? Krautrock jazz galore like Silver Mountain or have they changed it up a bit? I really dig their latter albums where there seems to be a greater sense of dynamics mixing in oozing calmer psychedelic sections, where Reine especially fits like a sonic glove.

It's locked into their usual style with super funky fuzz keyboards, couple of slower numbers but the rest groove like a bitch. Lots of the calmer psych you're looking for mixed in with drive. It's a winner.

really cool and smart art-pop - Field Music "Open Here". Imagine Grizzly Bear minus folk plus Talking Heads, or less quircky Dutch Uncles.

It's cool they're on PA, could you guys recommend me smth related?..

Nothing yet, although I am looking forward to the new Kino in a couple of weeks, the new Spock's Beard in May, and The Sea Within, assuming that comes out this year. It feels like it's going to be a quieter than normal year this year, considering that most of my main artists released in 2017 (Wilson, BBT) and DT14 isn't happening until 2019.

I've got enough great material to do my first "2018 Releases" broadcast on my radio show on Sunday night. I'll be playing:

Anna von Hausswolff
Starving Daughters
Homunculus Res
Gleb Kolyadin
Frequency Drift
Servants of Science
Mother Turtle
Arnaud Bukwald
Lunar Cape
Adam Holzman
Vantomme
and Sonar with David Torn

I do declare that this is already shaping up to be a stellar year!

A few good albums so far. Mother Turtle is interesting. Anna von Hausswolf needs closer inspection. Tony Banks album is beautiful. Nt really prog, but beautiful.
And Perfect Beings - Vier is the first album this year that has really stopped me in my tracks. The vocal harmonies are something special.

Rummaging through Everyday Music in Bellingham and they are spinning Anna von Hausswolff. Guess I'm buying it.

The only 2018 release I bought so far is Anna von Hausswolff's latest album. Also had the pleassure to see her perform live recently in Berlin. Blown away by the album and her live peformance.

One album I think I will get soon is the new Perfect Beings.

My radio show, "Prog Is Alive!" is broadcast on WDRT-Viroqua, FM 91.9, but streams through the website at www.wdrt.org. Look for "Prog is Alive" under the "Archives" "music" or check out the playlist each week under "playlists."
