Topic: Trick of the Tail Vs Going for the One Posted: February 21 2018 at 14:44 |
A couple of mid 70's prog gems, one from Genesis & one from Yes. Which do you like better?

Genesis, even if Awaken is on-par with Entangled.

Trick for me.
I enjoy it more than GFTO. GFTO has two songs that stand out these days - Parallels and Awaken. The rest is ok but not that special anymore.
The only song I can complain a bit on Trick is the title track. it's an ok song but not great (like the rest of the album).

1st vote for G4tT1! It's all about "Parallels" and "Awaken" for me.

Tough call...imo both have some good tracks and some average ones .....like the artwork on TOTT and hate the cover of GFTO.....but it's hard to beat Awaken.....perhaps the last great Yes epic.....so Yes wins.

Trick of the Tail just has that something extra which I can't really explain. Going for the One has some great stuff on it, and I can't argue with anyone who would put that first - there is something about Trick that defines a time, place and nostalgic feeling for me more.

Huge Yes fan. I like all of their seventies albums including Tormato a lot. However, GFTO is not in my top 3 of Yes(maybe number 5) where as ATOTT is my favorite Genesis album so there you go.

Both really good albums. I've probably listened to Trick more over the last 40 years.

Trick easy. GFTO is badly recorded
|
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I love all of Trick of the Tail, but only about half of GFTO...Turn of the Century and Wondrous Stories bore me to tears

Trick of the Tail is recorded very well and loves to be
cranked on a good system.
Going for the One is recorded poorly and fatiguing at high
volume on a respectable system. None the
less, it’s still a masterpiece.

Re: Going For The One - why does the title track sound so shrill ?? Actually, Howe sounds shrill all ‘round on this record.
