I thought I organise a little (or not so little) live album tournament. There will be a first round with a couple of themed heats (this one Yes vs. Genesis, some others to be started soon). From each round, the two winners will qualify for two semifinal heats, of which the two winners each will go through to the final.
I have a number of live albums already in mind that will appear but you can post requests (not for Yes vs. Genesis though, that's already started, I'll make no additions). I'm particularly weak on neoprog, and if you don't tell me what to put in I'll just take some entries that are highly rated on PA. But at the end of the day it's not a democratic affair. I'll decide what takes part and I decide the moment when the result counts.

Voting is open, Yes vs. Genesis, first two will go to the semifinals (I kind of expect it'll be one Yes and one Genesis but I take two of one band if that's the result).

Yessongs edges Seconds Out, but honourable mentions for Genesis Live (just too short! Imagine if it had been a double with Supper's Ready and other stuff!) and the underrated Yesshows. Keys is very strong in places, but represents a revival rather than the classic era. Best not to say anything about Three Sides Live - libel actions can be very costly!

From these ones my favourite is easily one that had no votes... keys to ascension. Many of my favourite versions of Yes songs come from this album. My other favourite Yes live album is Symphonic Live. From Genesis, I liked better the "Live at the Rainbow" album that comes included in the live box-set... it has the better songs that were not used on Genesis Live. Now, that one is rather strange, the CD version only has the songs that were not used in Genesis Live (which are the ones I like better anyway), but there's also the DVD audio version with the whole concert, including the ones that are also on Genesis live (only a different concert), and I guess that would be my choice for a favourite Genesis live album. Though some of the live albums from the Collins era are also very good, specially to get many of the better songs from that era, in better versions.

Genesis first live to me! I have always really respected their this move, in the middle of the most prog era where for example Yes released triple live, they released one album live, no gatefold covers, no gimmicks, not even their biggest live favourite Supper´s ready in it! I don´t know better words than it´s kind of uncommercial punk-attitude! Naturally of course I really like all the live versions that are on this album.

Anyway I like all those lives, Yessongs is my second choise although it has said overlong. I have listened Seconds Out only once, have to listen it again one of these days (many times I had been going to buy it from the record fares, always there had been other more important vinyls).

Actually, I like many of the classic Genesis songs better on their live versions... but as I said, those songs were mostly on the Rainbow concert, and somehow left out on the original Genesis live release. And the strange thing is that mostly I like the live versions better because I feel they have more energy than the original studio versions.

It was going to be a double album with Supper's Ready.

But the label was afraid they would not sell it.

As a fact there's one press of that double album released by Philips Récords Netherland (Philips – Matr.1: 6830 140.1 – Matr. 2: 6830 140.2), but was only promotional and reached the radios.

Would kill for that copy, but too expensive

^Really interesting! I have always though that one album without Supper´s was their own decision! Hard to understand record company thoughts of that time, Genesis was just then really popular so propably that 2LP would have sold well!

I'm mixing a bit the first live and the live at the rainbow albums, but indeed most songs were better live. Only, even though Firth of Fifth might have been better too, having the piano intro left out is enough to not really consider it. And about Supper's Ready, it's better in almost all it's parts, but the middle "comic" section just doesn't work well enough for me... most of those vocals come out wrong, so that song being such a flawless flow of musical passages should not be stained with a not so perfect part within it. And actually, these same two songs have exactly the same flaws on Seconds Out, otherwise I would love them too (specially since I don't really like Peter's singing, and I find Phill a much better singer).
