I think it's the worst by miles! The first two Floyd albums really were bilge.
As to the best: Camel, closely followed by GG, with the rest nowhere. |
One man's trash is another man's treasure, to each his or her own tastes and a number of similar phrases spring to mind.
You may think them bilge, but I enjoy them and believe that they have merit (heck, I don't believe that I'd think they were bilge even if I didn't enjoy them).
From the list, I like all of the albums to some extent. I think that I find Gentle Giant's, Pink Floyd's, Camel's and Jethro Tull's most remarkable. I'm thinking about going with Pink Floyd's even though I could very easily go with Gentle Giant's. While I do think that Gentle Giant's shows more musical maturity, complexity and skill, I do believe that Pink Floyd's is a significant Psych Rock/Pop album from 1967, and not just because Pink Floyd became so huge later on. I enjoy the sort-of naivety and youthfulness of it. Nah, I will go with the Gentle Giant -- love the album, and Nothing At All and Why Not? in particular are two of my favourite Gentle Giant songs.
Not really expecting it, but I had been hoping to see Magma's debut on the list (would have got my vote), not because the topic starter is big on them, but because there were very few new topics of the day, but there was a recent Magma poll, and I know that I am sometimes inspired by what other people are putting out and like to add to those topics, and reference them, sometimes with new topics (the idea in my head being a way of building momentum and camaraderie in coordination with others, if that makes sense). | I don´t understand what bilge means as an description of album (looked the word from dictionary, but didn´t make any sense to me). I am big 67 year music fan, but still I think Floyd´s debut is one of the greatest 1967 albums and has really aged in a great way! It´s one of the most personal and experimental albums of that year, really belong into group of two great Hendrix-albums, two great Doors-albums, Sgt. Pepper, Crayola´s first, Disraeli Gears, Velvet Underground & Nico etc.
Magma´s first is also my favourite of them, but I anyway would have voted Floyd. | Bilge means nonsense and/or garbage in the context (crap to be cruder). Well said about the album, I agree completely, and those are are excellent comparisons. I wish I had voted for the Pink Floyd.

Gentle Giant, mainly for being the more progressive of the list, but all of them have great music on them.

Camel's debut album may not be of earth shaking originality or virtuosity, but musicality and songwriting are just great.

I really need an other. Queen or Ambrosia would kick it all over these guys, but they're considered "Prog-Related." Sounds prog to me. Any number of Italian band's debut. Some Yes or Genesis solos, if they counted.

A surprisingly easy choice for me as I picked Camel. Maybe not fair as their debut was released in what? 1973 I believe while many of these are late sixties or 1970?

Kansas and Rush were both released in 74 so still not the earliest.

I like several of those equally so I'll say Caravan simply because I like Caravan and they need some votes.
