Of course there many other songs with the word "Home" in it, but I want to focus on some "Home" tracks that I really like and know. No doubt I'm missing Home tracks that I love, but these are mostly on my iPod (a device I haven't updated in quite a few years). Actually, even though it's not to my tastes, I think I will include Genesis "Home by the Sea"-- much as I like the Supertramp, I feel that that and the Genesis don't quite fit.
If I were doing albums, then News From Babel's Letters Home would be included and I cheated a bit with the Hatfield song and I included an Alice Coltrane (love that track and the album it's off, and to me the music is relevant). Feel free to mention any other "Home", but not without voting for one of these, and saying something about one of these in a post, and feel free to vote even if you've only heard three of them. For any that you don't know, here are links to songs on youtube. Cardiacs - The Alphabet... (Home of Fadeless Splendour) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlVNrsyjQ7c Alice Coltrane - Going Home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOVY7gMdRYk Genesis - Home by the Sea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il-9D9NPxWc Hammill, Peter - A Louse is Not a Home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwZ_tOZB1Qo Hatfield and the North - Son of "There's No Place Like Homerton" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk04cGkff44 Spirogyra - At Home in the World (skip to about 16:27 to hear it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MTAWHuIT8k Supertramp - Take the Long Way Home (a live version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKGOCOAI_2c U Totem - Vagabonds Home (not available on yt for album version so here'a live version that has been split into two parts). Part One: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AmVG7QuHJA Part Two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPKCti1SUNA As ever with such polls, as silly as they are to make, it will be interesting to see which ones get mentioned that I missed and make me say "Darn, I wish I'd remembered that." |

Tie between Hatfield (vote) and Genesis for me. Coltrane's piece (covered soon after on Santana's brilliant record Welcome) is also lovely. |

I love the Hatfield. Been ages since I last heard Welcome, I should check that out again. And no worries about posting the vid. I'm pleased when people do that when they express appreciation for something on the list. The Geddy Lee is not working in the embed for me, so here is a hyperlink. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0YJTlsy66k It's a very energetic song. |

Oh, that record is just awesome. Doug Rauch on bass, and the double keys attack of Tom Coster & Rick Kermode. A keyboard tandem wasn't Santana's usual formula. |

Hatfield by far,no contest!
Can't believe Home by the Sea is winning ...and I'm a huge Genesis fan. Homerton is lightyears better. |

Never had it in my collection, but a friend's brother did, and I certainly had liked that album. Have been listening to some of that album and listened again to the "Going Home" version on it (I see Alice Coltrane performs on it), and it's very nice indeed. The John Coltrane cover "Welcome" is terrific. I'm a pretty big fan of Herbie Mann and really like the version of "Mother Africa" and both "Light of Life" and "Flame-Sky" are pretty electrifying. I'll be getting the album. I don't have the later ones, but Santana is really good at least up to Borboletta. I once had an embarrassing moment when I was caught dancing to Santana's "Soul Sacrifice" -- it's not like I was dancing in my underwear, but still it was very embarrassing. I voted for Alice Coltrane's "Going Home". I love her early 70s albums (she also did Illuminations with Carlos Santana).
I greatly prefer the Hatfield (almost voted for it), but Home by the Sea must have got quite a few mentions here or else it wouldn't have come to my mind almost immediately when I thought of this poll (I was planning to leave it off the list). I knew it had its fans here. I don't mind it, but it is my least liked of the choices. I haven't listened to much post Wind and Wuthering Genesis. To each their own tastes. It might help if you grow up with the music, and maybe as John gets at, appreciating the lyrics helps (I generally don't pay a lot of attention to lyrics with the common exception of English language Folk music, being more of an instrumental guy). ---------------------------------------------------------------- I was hoping to see votes, or at least mentions, for the U Totem and Spirogyra (I know those bands have had quite a few fans at the forum over the years). "At Home in the World" was an immediate standout track for me with St Radigunds, and while the lengthy opener of U Totem's debut "One Nail Draws Another" tend to get the most attention from the album, I enjoy the lengthy closer "Vagabonds Home" at least as much. Spirogyra's St Radigunds was one of the first acid folk albums I got, and that U Totem was one of my first "modern" prog acquisitions that I loved. Incidentally, that youtube version of U Totem's Vagabonds Home does not sound very good to me, but the album is available for streaming at the Cuneiform Record bandcamp page for U Totem, including, of course, Vagabonds Home. It was a revelatory album for me when I first heard it. https://cuneiformrecords.bandcamp.com/album/u-totem |

If by "of these" you mean that there are other "Home" songs that you prefer, feel free to mention any others that you like. I hope that people will discover music that they like thanks to these topics, but I also like to discover new-to-me music (even if discoveries are more likely to hit the mark when its not themed around a word in the title but instead based on style of music, but even if it doesn't work for me, that's fine too, since someone else might discover something they love thanks to "others" that are mentioned). I edited the post. Youtube embeds won't work that way anymore. Now you just use the unique identifier after v=, in this case it is GqHSrJ2mLo0 and put that between the tube tags rather than the whole url. If done improperly it will try to install flash objects on a computer. I used to always use that way to embed vids and when old topics get bumped, sometimes I have to go in and fix mine as I was a too frequent embedder.
We're from the same city, and the same age, but different worlds, perhaps. That Dream Theater track makes for an interesting contrast to my choice of this bunch. Try playing both the Dream Theater and the Alice Coltrane at the same time for a transcendental experience. ;) Edited by Logan - March 24 2018 at 21:48 |

Home by the Sea. The Second is not a Home, but I prefer the Second or am I mixing things up and giving a lousy answer?
Genesis gets my vote anyway. DT is also fine.

A Louse is Not a Home for me. Perhaps my favorite VdGG-epic (that's not technically a VdGG-song but still). An early example of Peter Hammills matured lyricism with a lot more sophisticated imagery than just a few years prior. Perfect in every thinkable way.
Other half related home-related favorites: Gil Scott Heron - Home is Where the Hatred is Wim Mertens - At Home/Not At Home (especially the latter) Kraftwerk - Home Computer Roxy Music - In Every Dream Home A Heartache Yusef Lateef - Back Home -my absolute favorite is I Can Never Go Home Anymore by The Shangri Las though.
