Band of Horses has a song called "The Funeral", Elton John has one called "Funeral for a Friend".

Could you perhaps tell us what the song sounded like? Was it Prog Metal? Symphonic? Neo?

Thanks for the quick replies, it wasn't either of those songs unfortunately; it's a very melancholy song, mostly acoustic guitar, no percussion, very English sounding, the chorus lyrics I can remember went something like " No one could ever explain to me why Jesus died, if we cannot believe in ourselves, why should we fight", or something along those lines, and a search of those lyrics don't turn up much if I recall, apparently it's a very obscure song.

The closing track of Archive's "Controlling Crowds" is entitled Funeral and there's a passage with similar lyrics. the metric is different and I'm not sure it's the one you are looking for. But it may be.

I don't know either.

I you find the composer, you can inform him that the Jesus concept is, God-in-flesh would die a hanging (ie God cursed, cf Deuteronomy 21:23) loser in order for losers to feel closer to the "Afterlife's Ruler" and thus regain courage. Apart from that, it's meant to realize the good old "lamb takes sins" prophecy from Isaiah.

BUT that info may not be enough to heal someone from melancholy , because only an efficient bio-chemical reward system, typically endorphines, can annihilate it. Mankind survives through eras thanks to the precious placebo effect + often self delusional transport, at least mindsets that allow the famous "positive thinking" at the cost of no felt effort, so that even though there was no reason to be happy , an unexplainable joy is just there.

The dilemma of the melancholic ones is, if they're genetically crippled as far as production of endorphines is concerned, they may not want to cheat and take pills, in which case one could argue that they shouldn't ever go see a doctor for any physical issue...

Good luck with your research...
