I don't love ELP, but they did some good stuff until over-pretentiousness set in.

Love both; but the edge goes to ELP because of Lake's great vocal tone. I love Hammill as well but I have to be in the right mood.
A GREAT YEAR FOR PROG!!!

I prefer VDGG by quite a margin.

ELP. Actually could write memorable songs. Actually could sell albums. Actually could sell out concert venues. Actually could help get you laid rather than chasing women out of the room when you played their music.

They, along with Yes, Tull, Floyd and Genesis could do what the rest of the prog bands stewing in their ornate time signatures and fuzzy-headed obscurantism could not....

They could be wildly popular with a wide array of listeners, sell platinum albums and still compose complex music that even snobs on Prog Archives would listen to.

That is not just a marvelous feat, it's almost miraculous.

On this one, I go with VdGG...

VDGG has done more for me in a shorter period of time than ELP has ever done. Sad really

ELP. At their peak they were both progressive and yet accessible too. They seem to be the whipping boys on PA forums at present, but despite their pomposity at times and their post classic era deterioration, they deserve a little more prog love for what they did.

I would have chosen for ELP for years, but now I lean a bit more towards VdGG.

ELP for sure.
Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.
