Norway’s PIXIE NINJA Plays ProgDay 2018!
PIXIE NINJA is the creation of two individuals with a huge appetite for Scandinavian progressive music - Jostein Haugen and Marius Leirånes. Playing together in various projects since 2008, they began to work on Ultrasound, PIXIE NINJA’s debut album, in 2015. Marius and Jostein played guitar, bass and keyboards. The album was produced by Mattias Olsson (Necromonkey, Änglagård), who was also responsible for drums, percussion and other instruments. What emerged was an eclectic mix of heavy ambient, electronica and symphonic rock, all rendered with a strong cinematic feel. When Ultrasound was released in 2017, Marius and Jostein never intended to perform the material live. However, they later received so many requests for live shows, that they decided to make it happen. In February, 2018, Marius and Jostein asked Mattias Olsson to join the band on drums and Fredrik Klingwall to be the band’s new keyboard maestro. They met up at Roth-Händle Studios in May and started rehearsing for live shows. ProgDay is happy to host Pixie Ninja for its first performance in the U.S.! FERNANDO PERDOMO has been making a name for himself as a producer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. As owner and operator of Reseda Ranch Studios (Reseda, CA), he has been involved in a diverse range of musical productions, including work with Linda Perhacs, Dean Ford, Andy Pratt, Rebecca Pidgeon, Cristina Vane, Jacob Jeffries, The Dirty Diamond, Ex Norwegian, and Alih Jey. To progressive rock fans, he is probably best known as guitarist (and sometimes bassist) of the Dave Kerzner Band. For Fernando’s fifth solo album, Out To Sea, he decided to celebrate his love of progressive rock with a collection of instrumental symphonic rock pieces. Playing all of the instruments himself on the studio recording, The Out To Sea Band was formed to bring this music to the live stage. -------------- PÄR LINDH Solo Performance! PÄR LINDH was scheduled to perform a special solo piano performance at ProgDay 2017. Unfortunately, travel issues prevented him from making the show. We’re happy to invite him back for ProgDay 2018. PÄR LINDH’s musical career stretches back to 1977 when he formed Antenna Baroque. In 1979 he founded the symphonic trio Vincebus Ereptum. But with the changing musical times he spent his following years as organist, classical pianist, harpsichordist and drummer. While successful, he missed the calling of progressive rock. Beginning with his return to Sweden in 1989, he resurrected his early symphonic spirit with a band called Manticore, built the Crimsonian Label studio, and chaired The Swedish Art Rock Society. It was a very good weekend for music and friends even if the heat and humidity was rather draining by the end of the day. The clear highlight of the weekend for me was Alec K Redfearn & The Eyesores with an excellent set of material from the new album and selections from earlier stuff. Sound was great and it was nice to hear the French Horn more forward in the mix than I'm used to hearing from them.
Other musical highlights of the weekend included Pixie Ninja, who had a fairly short set, apparently they just have their one albums worth of material. I would have happily listened to them stretch out and jam a bit or play a cover. Karmic Juggernaut were fun with a Thank You Scientist & Mars Volta vibe with loads of energy, I personally could have done without the puppet show. Soften The Glare were pleasant enough fun fusiony metal stuff. Geph are a Boston based band I don't know, their dueling sticks were entertaining with a heavier vibe that the similarly equipped Stick Men. No bands were a disappointment though some were more in the good to listen to live but unlikely to buy camp. As usual ProgDay was very well run, the new food vendor was great and Star Points beer selections good & interesting. Had a fun beer swap with lots of good stuff to sample. Great to see so many friends at the festival. Had a great time.

^ f**king A Ian... Redfearn and the Eyesores were boss. Loving that new album btw, listening to it on the way back to the hotel yesterday, several more times on the drive home and just listened to it again. Great album
and couldn't agree more, her french horn was really up in the mix and absolutely loved it. If I had been as .. umm... out of body and mind yesterday as i was Saturday i might have got up and done some dancing. That music really grabs you in deep places and entrances you.

I'll touch on it in my review but I do think 5 bands a day pushed it a bit too far... on top of the heat which is almost always a factor. I think Michael realized that as well and hopefully next year we go back to 4. You would think the more the better, but just don't think it really worked out that well, not in that setting. Really wasn't fair in a way to the closing bands. You as a listener had nothing left for them, so many did, as we did, literally check out on them.
As Ian touched on, it was f**king brutal out there, especially on Saturday. Whew... first time in years we had to retreat to the car for AC and think I missed completely a band on Saturday. Time can get a bit fuzzy mid afternoon on the surface of the sun and when you hit the 3rd or 4th 6 pack of high octaine gas haha.. Edited by micky - September 03 2018 at 20:30 |

I agree with my other half that five bands a day were too many, especially with that kind of weather. This did each day's closing act a disservice, because by that time people were already exhausted and ready to leave. I know that, by 6.15 at the latest, I was unable to absorb any more music, and all I wanted was to have a shower and some food. Though I will always be immensely grateful to the organizers for all their hard work and dedication, and will continue to support the festival for as long as I can, I feel this year's lineup suffered from a few issues. First of all, too many bands that sounded similar, and not enough balance between instrumental-only bands and those with vocals. The bands that had the misfortune to play in the early afternoon (Pixie Ninja in particular) had to deal with the effects of the unrelenting heat and humidity on most of the crowd. On the other hand, I am aware that most of my issues with this year's edition had to do with my own inability to concentrate on most music. Nowadays it takes much more than it did in the past to hold my attention, and only two bands out of ten managed to do that this year. In any case, I believe it was a good move on the organizers' part to spotlight so many US based bands - even though they know as well as I do that this is the perfect recipe to alienate many prog fans. The main problem was, as I have already stated, a certain lack of diversity - that diversity that, in my view, has always been one of ProgDay's strengths. Some of my reservations also have to do with the general mood of this year's edition, which I found oddly subdued. For the first time, I noticed a cliquish bent in many of the attendees, rather than that "family" atmosphere I had always found so endearing and refreshing. However, as I said before, the fault may well lie with me and my diminished social skills. In spite of all that, I am still looking forward to next year's edition.

Pixie Ninja.. yeah I think that is the band I completely missed... between the heat and pitching a 6 pack due to preceding awesomeness of Karmic Juggernaut. Getting old sucks... yet another reason to limit it to 4 bands. We ain't getting younger.. big differences between killing 4 six packs and 5 plus hitting the Korean booze (that stuff was awesome btw) for dinner afterward hahah

Thanks to the organizers (Michael B. and company) for another tremendous show. Special thanks to the ProgDay'ers who made my wife and I feel at home: Ian, Michael & Raph, Connie & the Captain, Chris B., and numerous others whose names slipped thru the gaping sieve I call a memory. Thanks to you we all had a great time and plan to return next year (health and well being permitting). I'll post some observations about the bands next week when we return home and I have a full size keyboard and fonts readable without a magnifying glass. Mark and Shirley |
