Though it might be fun to look at some bands that either influenced prog or had prog elements to their music.
Beyond picking one fell free to rank them using any criteria you see fit (Personal preference,  Impact on prog or music in general, ....)

Aside from maybe Deep Purple I wouldn't consider any of these to be proto prog.

I'd have gone with Spirit, Jefferson Airplane or The Move (all listed as Proto-Prog on the site) or Bert Jansch or John Renbourn (both listed as Prog Related) or The Grateful Dead or Quicksilver Messenger Service (who both should count as Proto-Prog), but in their absence I went with Bowie.

I know. This site has this rule that if it's before itchycock it's automatically proto prog and if it was released one day later it's full blown prog. Confused As if as soon as that album was released every band changed their sound over night and said "ok, we're full blown prog now." Tongue

Yea, I thought some of the classifications  were strange as well. For example I would have put The Who in prog related but they have them listed as proto-prog. Go Figure?

Deep Purple's Burn was my introduction to music outside of AM radio, so I gave them my vote. I enjoy the rest too much to rank them in any way.

I suppose The Beatles....though as already pointed out I never thought pf them as proto prog nor many of the others either as prog related.

The Beatles will get enough votes, so I chose Hendrix. Half the stuff played by prog guitarists is directly due to Jimi. To say he wasn't progressive in the 60s is merely showing an ignorance for the era and for the guitar in general.

All of them. They have a fantastic legacy (except maybe Queen, though their early stuff is amazing).
