One band incorporated classical into pop music and the other jazz into pop. Which one do you like better?

Depending on which era of the band, I could vote for one or the other, so I'll go for both equally.

Both are not my big faves, but if I have to choose, it´s ELO.

Both are bands I like but don't love.

Both have done some very good albums (Time (which I'd actually rate as superb - a forgotten gem), Eldorado, Out of the Blue: The Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic, Can't Buy a Thrill) but they don't set my soul on fire.

Yeah, that's what it is, that "ELO sound." Just can't get into it either. I tried listening to the first couple albums and while they sounded different and more interesting than the later, more popular stuff, it just didn't do much for me.

Steely Dan by some distance, although ELO have their moments

Wow, never thought Steely Dan would stomp on ELO like this. What's sad for me is the realization that ELO are more typically considered prog or prog related just because of the orchestra sounds and strings when in fact they aren't any closer to prog(over all)than Steely Dan. I say this because I see ELO mentioned in the same sentence as ELP, Yes, Genesis, etc than I see SD mentioned. Anyway, I probably prefer SD more but I won't vote since I haven't heard much ELO other than the hits.

Same here, though I like some of Countdown to Ecstasy.

Jeff Lynne is a songwriting genius; greater IMO than than the two Steely guys put together. In output too, sheer number of songs and consistency, Lynne is much more significant.

ahhh that is a tough one. Two of my absolute favorite groups.

If one held a gun against my head, I'd have to go with the Dan.  For they are one of the very minuscule few groups that wrote lyrics that I found were actually were worth paying attention to.  By far, Fagen and Becker, were the best par none rock lyricists in all rock.  Even more so than Richards-Jaggar, Lennon-McCartney.  Brilliance man.. sure brilliance.

That said,  Jeff Lynne probably had one of the keenest ears for melody outside of McCartney, and the less said about Richard Tandy the normal whose talent and creativity sh*t all over the likes of more famous prog keyboardists like f**king Tony Banks haha

I personally never really understood most of Steely Dan's lyrics. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention. Some of the lyrics seem a bit strange though even cryptic.
