I also love the 'one hit wonders' and 'obscure bands' like that from the 70's...though I don't consider Pulsar obscure per se .....and a few of the others are fairly well known among prog fans.
I'll look to see if I can find any other odd ones in my collection...I had a friend who burned me some really obscure things on cd a few years back. surprised.. well not really.. this one has not been mentioned. Obscure.. you bet ya ass they are... this one blew the Xover team away and was a personal discovery fav of Dean and mine when we added them.
of course my favorite from the obscure category is the Austrailiian band Bakery whose Momento album ranks very high on my list of alltime favorite prog albums |

Pulsar is fantastique! I hope you enjoy them...the 1st 3 70's albums are brilliant, after that the 1988 reunion album Gorlitz is still cool, but definitely a big step down...the 2007 'double reunion' album Memory Traces has slipped a little further. Hurray for the magic of obscure 70's prog  Since multiple releases aren't a problem, I'd add these other obscure 70's albums to your list:Ethos - Open Up (1977)(their other album was mentioned earlier, both cool, but I like this one better) Yezda Urfa - Sacred Babboon (1976) Mona Lisa - Grimaces (1975), Le Petit Violon de Monsieur Gregoire (1976), Avant Qu'll ne Soit Trop Tard (1977) Synopsis - Minuit Ville (1979) Terpandre - s/t (1978) Atoll - L'Arignee Mal (1975) FM - Black Noise (1978) Khan - Space Shanty (1972) Ange might or not be considered obscure as they're probably the biggest 70's French prog band and still active. I think someone new to prog would likely have never heard of them, but it's your call if you wish to include them. If so, these are what I consider their "must have" 70's albums: Caricatures (1973), Le Cimetiere des Arlequins (1974), Au Dela Du Delire (1974), Emile Jacotey (1975), Guet Apens (1978)

There's another good obscure seventies US band called Easter Island. Their first album is hard to find these days unfortunately but I had it a long time ago on cd(it was issued by ZNR records; the same label that did Mastermind)and it's a really good one. Some parts are like Gentle Giant while others are more Genesis and Yes and maybe a bit of Uriah Heep(especially in the vocal dept). Cathedral was another great US band who had one album in the seventies called "stained glass stories."

Greg's said in the past Banco's his favorite band. But he loves Eloy probably as much. Nice to see Pablo "El Enterrador," Celeste and East on there. But I'd quickly swap out that Wakeman album for Six Wives or (my preference) Criminal Record. I'd also pick Nuova Era's very next album Il Passo del Soldato (a stunner). Same for Crimson. I'm surprised he didn't pick Court or even LTiA. I'd also replace Spock's Beard with another band/album — even Pendragon's The Jewel. Finally: I'm severely disappointed by the exclusion of Goblin's Roller. I'm going to have to talk with Greg about this, lol. He does have the right Marillion album, though!

I agree with you about that Marillion album even though it took a while to grow on me back in the early spring of 92 when I bought it on cassette. I personally think "the light" might be Spock's Beards best album(at least of the NM era). I admittedly haven't heard much post NM SB. Yeah, I don't think Poseidon is KC's best either although it is very under rated. I would pick LTIA over it and I'd imagine most would pick "red" over it. As for Pendragon's "the jewel" I haven't heard it but I have heard it's rather slow and boring(not sure if that is true or not). No IQ on the list though. How about "ever?" As for "Wakey" I actually don't know Criminal Record. Maybe that's one of his last really good ones? I personally would take "Myths and Legends...." over the two before it although "Six wives" is a very good instrumental album.

IQ's Subterranea is on the list. I'd also swap that out for Ever.
Criminal Record is a marvelous achievement. It's one of Rick's best outings. But I'd also check out 1984, Out There and the pair of Retro albums he did, at the very least. He also has a few superb solo piano records to his credit, like The Piano Album and Night Airs (the best of the Airs series). |

Oops. That's right. Subterranea is on there. No Flower Kings though. No Porkie Tree either. I had "country airs"(I think it was)on cassette a long time ago. Nice piano music. I also recommend Moraz and Bruford's "music for piano and drums" if you like piano stuff. I don't know 1984 but I did hear Time Machine I think. His solo catalog is very hit or miss but when you have a catalog that big I suppose that's to be expected. I'm not an expert on Rick's music but based on what I do know the majority of his best stuff seems to be from the seventies. His return to the center of the earth was not too bad though. Bonus points for having Patrick Stewart narrate it. |

Still one of my all time favorite albums. Even their first album was very good with an excellent version of LIAR. I bought, I think, 3 different copies of that album. I had that cover (and Flash's first) on my walls for many years ... like 25 or 30. It was, and is, my tribute to HIPGNOSIS and their art, but above all, these covers always told you how good the music was. And the inside cover of that album, was even better, if not as good ... all band members were singing with their eyes closed! To update the listing with some of the stuff I like ... I really will have to go through my spreadsheet for Space Pirate Radio shows I have. Edgar Broughton Band - OORA and BANDAGES The Groundhogs - CROSSCUT SAW and BLACK DIAMOND (even though these could be considered power blues and such, in many ways, due to the sound itself, these are very progressive and strong.)

Doug, you know I share your enjoyment of that album. And, as I think you know, a few of the band's members played on Gordon Giltrap's album "Live at Oxford", which may well be his best. And if you like Giltrap, check out Paul Brett, with two great albums from the late 1970s - "Interlife" and "Eclipse." A band that is unjustly obscure and is prog folk, in Strawbs' vein, is Decameron. I think their best in "Third Light" from 1975 Other prog folk gems Amazing Blondel - very Elizabethan sounding, any of "Evensong", "Fantasia Lindum" and "england" are great Dan Ar Braz (Breton) - "Douar Nevez" and also a brilliant album called "Acoustic" Cano - "Au Nord de Notre Vie" Garolou - "Lougarou" or "Garolou" Haizea - "Hontz Gaua" (Basque) Itoiz - "Itoiz" and "Ezekiel (also Basque - the first is a near masterpiece, the second IS a masterpiece) Horslips - any of "Happy to Meet Sorry to Part", "The Tain" and "The Book of Invasions" Los Jaivas - "Alturas de Machu Picchu" (from the 80s but fully 70s styled) Nigel Mazlyn Jones - "Ship to Shore" Perry Leopold - "Christian Lucifer" - another one that was recommended but is just too good to pass over Malicorne - "Almanach" O.W.L - "Of Wondrous Legends" Pearls before Swine - "The Use of Ashes" Pererin - "Haul Ar Y Eira" and "Teithgan". Don't delay on these!
