I just joined up after using this site for references for a few months. I browsed the forums a couple times and it seems like a nice community. I'm 17 years old. I'm a big prog fan and also LOVE Canterbury Scene.

Some of my favorites right now are:

VDGG
Gong
Daevid Allen
Focus
Magma
National Health
Can

I'm always looking music suggestions. I want to dive deeper into Neo-Prog, maybe some Fusion/Jazz-Rock,  and any other stuff that I must hear.

Welcome, I am a big Canterbury fan myself.  It's probably my favorite sub-genre!

Hello there! I'm a fellow Canterbury nut but I can say right now that I doubt neo-prog will be your thing. You'll find it far too closely linked to poppish style music, if you're used to the weird and jazzy.

Try Gentle Giant for size, though!

I have tried out some Neo-prog. Marillion. Spock's Beard, and The Flower Kings too. I have a couple albums. I like it. I'll take that IQ reccomendation. Thanks.  

I'm very familiar with GG, it really deserves to be up there with the rest of my current favorites.

If you very adventurous stuff un the fusion sub-genre (closer to
avantgarde, actually) try Area.

Excellent! Here's some more stuff for you to try then:

  • Area (as someone else has rightly suggested)
  • Dun (Only one album, but it's a belter!)
  • Anglagard (Symphonic prog that's both retro AND innovative... somehow)
  • Hatfield and the North (Seminal Canterbury band that you may well be already aware of)
  • Robert Wyatt (Important Canterbury figure and genius lefty songwriter. His solo work and band Matching Mole are both highly recommended, as is his work with early Soft Machine)
  • Frank Zappa (You gotta try him sometime. Hot Rats would be a safe option)
  • Samla Mammas Manna (Insane Swedish avant garde jazzrock group - my current favourite band)
Well, that's enough to be getting on with, I guess. Let me know what you think of them, if you don't already know/like them that is.
