The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

I pick Hemispheres from this list, followed by UK. Anabelas has justly been mentioned. But one of the best, maybe the best, comes from Bosnia of all places: Modra Rijeka by Indexi.

Hemispheres, marginally ahead of Heavy Horses and A Song For All Seasons.

Craptsh*tcha is really acting up today Hemispheres from this list, but its best competition is not on the list, IMHO (and not just mine)

I don't like to vote for "other" when so many good options are given, so Anabelas and Of Queues and Cures only get an honorable mention. My vote goes to Hemispheres.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

He neither drank, smoked, nor rode a bicycle. Living frugally, saving his money, he died early, surrounded by greedy relatives. It was a great lesson to me -- John Barrymore

I was so much in other places in 78. The most important was to keep my hairs stood on my head.

From this list, UK gets my vote. In the Dead of Night suite and Nevermore are my personal highlights off the album. Great vocals, absolutely incredible guitar parts courtesy of mr. Allan Holdsworth and of course the show stealer that is the unmistakable Bruford drumming that adds that special bit of magic to the mix.

Haven't seen my 2nd and 3rd faves from '78 mentioned yet. The first, one of the great live prog double albums, and the other an obscure gem
Van Der Graaf - Vital Cathedral - Stained Glass Stories

Yes, most of that. I haven't heard Ghilgoul or Haruomi Hosono, but the rest is outstanding. Hope and Fears is an all-time fave regardless of year.

I really love Hopes and Fears, and all Art Bears albums, but Hopes and Fears was my first, and the discovery was quite revelatory (not sure if I was into Henry Cow yet other than a track or two). Cochin Moon is an unusual album In Progressive Electronic, and pretty unusual period. Cochin Moon was intended as a score for a fictitious Bollywood film, and it has some interesting electronic experimentation. As for Ghilgoul, that is a great Zeuhl album (I love his Neffesh music albums). His solo work is not as popular as bands he was in (Zao, Magma, Univeria Zekt etc.) The kinds of music I listed used to get more attention in the Prog Archives forum, but there don't seem to be so many of the avant-prog and related persuasion around these days (mind you, there just aren't as many people around posting period - Captcha in part -- I'm having trouble getting this post through). |

Voted for Hemispheres which is obviously a classic but my fave is Can - Out if Reach.
Just going to put it on now so the poll worked in getting me thinking of 1978. |
