Rush only did two side long epics (not counting COS which feels like individual songs to me)so here we go.

I absolutely adore both.

But Hemispheres was just the right record at just the right time in my life with some VERY special memories attached.

I know I'm in the minority, but on a personal level, I have to give it to Cygnus X-1 pt II.

Hemispheres. But if I could pick one Rush composition, epic or not, it would be either "Xanadu" or "La Villa Strangiato"

Hemispheres is most exceptional.
but 2112, dated though it may be, will always hold a most special place in my collection.

My two favourites as well, although Hemispheres is in the top 10.

2112 by a very small margin.

Hemispheres.  I like 2112 a lot, but it often sounds like many disjointed pieces stuck together compared to Hem which seems much more thoughtfully composed.  I think it shows just how much Rush grew in composition skills over the 3 years between them.

2112 has a special place in my heart.  This was the first thing I heard from Rush and I heard it just before the band hit it big.  I saw it in the Columbia House catalogue, read their review and thought, "Meh, I'll try it."  I plugged in the 8-track and my jaw hit the floor.  I never looked back, I bought everything they had available at that point.

2112 easily, perhaps my very favourite Rush song. I don't even like Cygnus that much... it's nice and all, but kind of too repetitive or something.

Agreed (except I like "2112" better than "Hemispheres"). As far as prog goes, those two are the peak for Rush.

Impossible choice. I had to vote for both equally.

As much as I like 2112 I'm going to have to go with Hemispheres(what I call it). I used to play the cassette tape back when I would walk through the bus terminal when visiting my mother back in the day. Hemispheres sort of became my bus terminal theme music. I realize that parts of it could be considered repetitive but the same could be said about Close to the Edge and especially Karn Evil 9. I really like the otherworldly mellow section towards the end.

I so wanted to pick 2112, as much as I dearly love that epic and album, as OP asked about both? Anyhow, Hemispheres is brilliant, considering the time when it was created.
I look at Hemispheres as the more grown up version of the Rush epics, 2112 still has that kid/video game feel to it.....It does not get any better than those two epics.

I dig them both equally.
Different "feels" to them.
Welcome to the middle of the film.
