Seeing as we have taken over the site I have decided to run a RIO/Avant World Cup

This will have 12 groups of 5 to start with the top 2 advancing

The #1 seeds were based on the original 8 RIO bands plus 4 additional seeds.

The balance were picked across countries and based on number of rankings. I kept bands from the same country apart.

Top seeds - Henry Cow, Univers Zero, Aksak Maboul, Etron Fou Leloublan, Stormy Six, Samla Mammas Manna, Art Zoyd, Art Bears, Present, Thinking Plague, Cardiacs, Frank Zappa.

Group B
Univers Zero - Belgium - 1759 ratings - 4.10 average
Taylors Universe - Denmark - 495 - 3.94
Cheer-Accident - USA - 275 - 3.77
Opus Avantra - Italy - 143 - 3.66
Ahvak - Israel - 72 - 3.74

Tough choice between UZ and CA. I probably listen to more CA albums, but none of there stuff beats Used. Going to have to come back to this.

I feel like it's the dull and predictable choice, but UZ. They pretty much stand alone.

UZ and Ahvak stand above the rest here.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive
Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

Except for Taylor's Universe which I remember as exactly the kind of genereric prog that does nothing for me (+the sterile production/sound certainly didn't help). Really tells me that bands placed in RIO/Avant can be just as regressive and by numbers as any Flower Kings/Spocks Beard... Apart from that I've I have enjoyed music from all these* but Universe Zero reigns supreme

Looks wide open for the second spot, great to see Ahvak getting votes, love that album and three of the band members are friends.

I didn't vote for it, but am very fond of the album. Do you know of any post-Ahvak projects we should hear?

So definitely Cheer-Accident to my tastes, with 'Fear Draws Misfortune' being head and shoulders above anything else any of the bands (CA included) did.

Part of that may be that it was one of my first RIO/AP albums though (just after Simon Steensland's Fat Again)

Those two were very early in my exploration of wonky music along with Miriodor - Avanti!, I can't think of Fear Draws or Avanti! without thinking about the other one.

Sounds like we started with the same vintage, circa 2009 ... I also heard Avanti! around that time, although I'm less enamoured with Miriodor than the other two.
