Songs you still can't believe became hits... Preferably those written in the 60s/70s also for longevity purposes.

In the Year 2525, by Zager & Evans. It was the #1 hit on the day I was born, July ‘69. What the hell is that about.

^ Same here except it was the Monkees a few years earlier with "I'm a Believer".   Not one of Neil's best.

On the other hand in '73 A Passion Play was #1 as well.   Rolling Stone said it was "a pop potpourri of Paradise Lost and Winnie The Pooh", and called it "expensive, tedious nonsense".

LOL  No argument there, but very interesting to see what was being both panned and flying off shelves just a few years later.

Excerpt from 'A Teenage Opera' - Keith West. It reached No.2 in the UK singles charts in 1967.

'Grocer Jack' (as my Mum called it) had a touch of psychedelia to it. Keith was part of Tomorrow as well. I didn't mind it, even if it was a bit twee at times, but I am honesty still surprised it reached such a lofty position in the charts as it is a bit of a one-off curio.

...now that only leaves another several thousand hits from the last 50 years to shake my head at in disbelief at their commercial success - starting with 'Telephone Man', 'I've Never Been to Me' (..continued pg 96)

Well usually it has to do with someone sucking someone's private parts and then moving on to more adventurous exploitations. Often lots of money is involved. Drug runs. You get the gist.

Wow. I was just thinking of that song today and it occurred to me that "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring has the same melody for the chorus.
