BY THE WAY - JUST FOR FUN - PLAY THEM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. IT IS UNCANNY.  But you will need to lower the volume on the Cardiacs tune quite a bit to find the balance between the two.

Cardiacs - Piffol Four Times is from the period (80-81) of the first 2 cassette albums, The Obvious Identity and Toy World. And it was clearly influenced by several Frank Zappa toons.

Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat: Main Title Theme. One of the many quirky instumentals that influenced Cardiacs and probably the main influence for Piffol Four Times.

They are similar and sound interesting played together. I have another in my collection that sounds very similar (especially to the Zappa). If I can remember it later I will post it (part of Picchio dal Pozzo's Seppia is coming to mind, but that's not it). I appreciate both equally in their own way, but as I'm on a big Cardiacs kick right now, it will get my vote.

Ouch. Would really like to honor that Zappa's is so much older and clearly the one that influenced the other. Just forgetting what came out when I find the Cardiacs one a tiny weeny bit better. So what do I do now?

I'm with Frank Zappa on this one, though I enjoy the Cardiacs a lot too.

That track doesn't sound anything like the later Cardiacs. It's on an archival release of early demos and unreleased tracks so of course they will not be as developed as they would later become and display more of the sound of their influences. They didn't release that track on any album and that only appeared in 1989 on the Archive Cardiacs compilation. Still sounds good but i would vote for Zappa in this case. Uncle Meat is an EXCELLENT album.

That Cardiacs song is indeed very Zappa-esque. Voted for the Cardiacs one.

Actaully, not quite correct there my friend, five of the tracks on Archive were released on Toy World and on the Bus 7" single, so not demos. "Aukamacic" "Icky Qualms" "Scratching Crawling Scrawling" "As Cold As Can Be In An English Sea" "My Trademark".  Smile

Well, there's no denying the influence there!

I like them both very much. The Uncle Meat theme is Zappa at his most academic and uncompromising, and it's a great piece - who else was bringing this kind of compositional sensibilty to bear in an even nominally ‘rock’ context in 1969?? The Cardiacs piece is much more human to my ears though, and has that characteristic humour - I love the deliberate little stumble / pause at 10 to 11 seconds in, for instance.

My vote goes to Cardiacs.
Soldato of the Pan Head Mafia. We'll make you an offer you can't listen to.
