Earlier I wrote "Conventional Prog, Alternative Prog and Experimental Prog", although I could have put it in two categories, conventional and unconventional Prog, but when I woke up I was thinking about this topic for some reason (might have had a really boring dream), and will offer an alternative answer:

Progressive Prog
Regressive Prog
Static Prog

It works better on the individual album level, but then classification would often work better that way.
Just a fanboy passin' through.

Actually this is my first post here... is a relaunch of PA being considered?

Meanwhile, I really don’t know how I would answer the question, though I’m thinking about it and have one idea.

Welcome to PA!  I agree with Symphonic, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Whatever-it-is!

I reckon it boils down to these categories if you do your cancelling out properly...
If you like it, IT IS PROG.
If you don't like it, IT IS NOT PROG...

Two categories:

1) Prog

2) The crap you think is prog.

to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...

1. Rock music that is literally progressive
2. The genre conventionally called "progressive rock"
3. The genre called "prog rock" by alt.rock aficionados

Prog rock is a sub genre (of rock). I might make a slight distinction for the jazz and fusion oriented stylings.

1. NZ Prog
2. Aussie Prog (this enormous cohort will obviously need some subdividing, starting with the usual split between Mike Rudd bands vs everyone else, and continuing on from there)
3. Exotic Prog From Other Mysterious and Far-off Cultures...

Simple!

Big smile
