Both bands have early, mid, and late periods, and the music from late periods is often just as different from those early periods as it is from other bands. I think a more interesting poll might be around which is the best period for each band. Saying this, overall I think Porcupine Tree has a (slightly) stronger discography.

Porcupine Tree for me. There is everything in Porcupine Tree music, thrashy metal to atmospheric ambient.....How can you go wrong with the back rhythmn section of Gavin Harrison and Colin Edwin. Even though I enjoy Pete Trewavas's playing.

I guess I'll be the first person to vote "both equally." Not because it's how I do my polls but because it's how I really feel. Both bands pack a solid punch but I like both for different reasons. I probably used to like PT more but I have got into Marillion more lately(especially H era).

Any PT (from Sky Moves Sideways to The Incident) album over any Marillion album. However, if PT is put against other neo-prog band, Arena, it would be close.

30 years ago it would have been a Genesis wannabe clone vs Porcupink Floyd. Then both the bands evolved. I absolutely love Coma Divine (recorded close to my home) and Sky moves Sideways, Stupid Dream...that perios, but I really loved the Fish era, Script excluded. Basing on who I actually listened to more, I have to vote Marillion.
Curiosity killed a cat, Schroedinger only half.

Porcupine Tree.

I'm not a massive fan of either, but PT are less annoying, and also tend to be more interesting and experimental with their sound. I also don't think Marillion ever recorded an album as good as In Absentia, with the possible exception of Script which is at least on a par.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
