1977: Peter Gabriel published his first solo record "Peter Gabriel" (Aka: Car).
It's a very heterogeneous and Baroque album, with a great masterpiece, "Here comes the Flood". 1977: "Over" is the sixth studio album by Hammill, and it details the break-up of a long-term relationship with a woman. It includes melancholic songs with wonderful strings arrangements. Two different album: different for music, mood, arrangements and lyrics. Choose your favorite album.

I'm one who thinks Peter Gabriel got better as a vocalist after he went solo, but his material got worst without the collaboration.

Love the Gabriel solo albums, but Hammill wins this one.

Gabriel's first solo album is very much a pop album; the best track is "Moribund the Burgermeister". So most definitely Peter Hammill for me.

I am not surprised Peter Gabriel gets more votes. His first solo album is much more accessible than "Over". "Over" easily wins for me for the track "This side of the Looking Glass" alone. I love this live version of the track: |

Solsbury Hill is probably my favourite song of all time. PG1 is also the best debut album ever imo . Just a completely off the wall set of unique songs covering so many different styles. Christ there is even a barber shop thing. Who does that??! Really love that album but can't vote as I'm just not familiar with Hammill's solo output.

Hammill all the way here. I have all the Gabriel albums on cassette, though apart from the odd track here and there, his solo career never really clicked with me.
