found on the alt.music.mp3.winmx newsgroup:

Quote Here is the link.

http://www.winmxworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=419

I always thought the winmx community was a strong one, but I have been
amazed at how quickly these workarounds have appeared since the official
winmx cache servers were taken offline.

I do wonder however, as there seem to be two different host patches
going around, if there are now two (or more) separate winmx networks?

The one I am on does seem to be functioning well - I have more secondary
connections than usual, but the quality of the files turning up in
searches looks very good.

I suppose the need for a patch will reduce the userbase, but the more
motivated members of the community will remain, so at the moment at
least, the winmx network looks more healthy than it has for a while.

-There do seem to still be spoofed files for some titles - but now there
is more chance of the sources being blocked centrally once the network
is stable.

I look forward to seeing how all this develops.

Quote Even though some may find it pretty obvious where to go once you've
arrived on the page produced by the link that was given, I'm sure that
providing a hint won't hurt anyone. So here you go, click on this to
fetch the patch...

Quote Great, works for me... now all we need is a patch to fix the RIAA.

Quote The link refers to a msg on a forum, in the msg, there is a link to an
exe file that you have to run. Here is a direct link to the exe file
mentioned there:

Please note: I just found this out and don't have the time to try it myself yet. Schizoid Man

Thanks Larry (Schizoid Man). SM is a friend of mine and he walked me through the patch process. It didn't work at first, but I'm now connected to WinMx again. There is a God! Gracias Amigo!

The funny thing is when the .exe install prompts you to select the operating system (XP, 98, 2000) we had to select 2000 even though you're running XP.

I'm running XP as well but for some reason it worked OK for me (I didn't have to select 2000).

And also, it wouldn't load using Firefox. Had to switch to IE and disable all firewalls.

Rock on with your nasty self!

Alternatively, have an easier and more communal time of it and download Soulseek!

I'll have to try it out. Who knows how long the patch will work? WinMX is in a state of transition...kind of like when Gabriel left Genesis...or, when Bruford left Crimso.

Did they ever fix WinMX so that you can use it with a router, or do you still get BSOD?

No blue screen of death. It runs through my router fine. I had to manually open up a couple of ports and enable UDP packet transfers. There is (was?) a FAQ run-through that went over everything.

Learn how to use your router- unless of course you are trying to connect through your office router - in which case, learn how to bribe your admin.

I love this quote from the newsgroup link above:

Quote: Sept 20th at 12:00 somewhere time WinMX had to shut down... on Sept 23rd at 12:00 somewhere time Winmx users said f**k that and reopened it....
