A poll for old times sake: Marco vs Gavin from Swilson and P. Tree. Who is the better drummer?

Marco gets my vote. Now if it was Marco vs Bill Bruford, that would be more difficult to decide.

I don't know if anyone could beat Bruford in a head to head competition lol

MacGyver can do a super guitar solo with a broom and an elastic band. Can you do better?

I always enjoyed Harrison's work.....and I'm not all that familiar with Minneman's.
Need to  ck out some tracks.

Both are great but I would have to go with Gavin here. More of a fan of his jazzy style.

Have you heard Marco's solo album Broken Orange or his recording with Dewa Budjana? Both are quite jazzy.

Maybe Vinnie Colaiuta, Chad Wackerman, or Simon Phillips.

I actually prefer both Marco and Gavin over Bill. But, really, when push comes to shove would turn down the opportunity to see any of these three perform their magic?

I voted for Marco. I can't think of many modern drummers I like as much (or more). Perhaps putting Nick D'Virgillio in the poll might have given me a headache. Judas Unrepentant (BBT) is well up there for drumming imo.

Both are great drummers, but since I met Marco after a concert and had a chance to chat a little with him, he gets my vote.

I haven't heard that one. I'll have to check it out.

Both are great drummers but I tend to love the music more on which Gavin appears.

Bruford > Peart! Wanna go?! WinkLOL

As far as this poll, I'm partial to Marco's skills.

Marco is insanely versatile. Not many modern drummers I would vote over Gavin but Marco is one of them.

I am missing a ‘both’ option. I like them just about equally.
They do both play that ‘technique-over-sheer-feel’ which is a common trait found in prague-land, and I much prefer it the other way around these days. I prefer ex Porcupine Tree drummer Chris Maitland to both actually although he probably is a tad or two beneath them in technical prowess.
Tastes differ

+1 Bruford beats Peart lol

I will say tho that i think some of the 70s drumming greats have an edge on B in terms of versatility/range (like Collins for example, or someone like Chester Thompson or most of Zappa's other drummers).

B's style is quite inflexible on most of the material he performed on imo - and arguably became more so with time as he moved away from some of the early Yes-style accents/flourishes - tho on some of the last live Earthworks releases he's probably at the peak of his playing ability.

In fact I'm surprised he retired at that point because to my ears he probably had years of great playing left, but maybe behind the scenes he was starting to find it more challenging - I know that he felt he'd lost some of his confidence in his playing etc.
