Each of these is the longest track off each band's second album. Please vote for the one you prefer (and no Cans and Brahms).

Thanks. A funny title, or so I had hoped (I'm rather style over substance and I do think most at PA have rather more sophisticated senses of humour than I do, which isn't saying much, I like potty humour), which was inspired by your Can Openers comment. While I thought of "Rush to the Can" before deciding on how I'd choose the tracks, I do find these satisfyingly musically comparable in a certain bluesy, jammy way, and certain rhythmic intensities (to me the Can is mostly about the groove, whereas the Rush has more "parts" to it and is less "tribal"). Ramble alert: While I don't treat my polls as contests -- I am more interested in the comments, and hopefully exposing people to something they didn't know before which they might dig -- and I knew Rush would get more votes as it is one of the most popular bands at the site, it ended up being a little too-lopsided. It's always really nice when I do a poll and people say "both", or have something positive to say about both choices. The best poll topics for me are those where I discover or re-discover something new, or it causes me to re-think things and maybe see things in a new light. Most any good topic and poll, at least for me, forces one to not just compare but think, and can be revelatory, some are much better at creating those than others. That said, since this started as just for fun idea, one shouldn't expect profundity from such a topic. Perhaps I should stick more with the cod philosophy topics, but now that I'm thinking about Prog "Cod" Philosophy, I want to do a poll about Fish and similarly fishy artists such as Chris Squire, and Mr. Hal E. Butt (if such a Prog musician exists). Instead of focusing on the music, I'd focus on their philosophical musings, but such a poll in Prog Polls would be something of a red herring. Actually, philosophy and Prog is an interesting topic, from Rush's Ayn Randian themes to the communist aspects of Henry Cow and Robert Wyatt. I did do a song lyrics one before on determinism vs. libertarian free will (I used Rush's Free Will as one example), but people were more interested in which song they liked more than the notions of free will. It was a very Philosophy 101 sort of topic. But I ramble.... I'd ramble elsewhere, but having trouble finding posts with ideas that are easy for me to explore today. I should get a diary for such rather nonsensical, rambling musings as this. |

Hahaha 3:14, taste is a strange thing. Mother Sky is a statement like not many others. On the other hand I'm surely not a Rush fan, but still they have quite a few I like more than this mess.

Just listened to both samples. Both were very good but I REALLY liked the Can one, very rhythmic and just right up my alley. I should get serious about that band.

I gave "Mother Sky" its second vote. I don't usually vote in my polls or vote without mentioning it, but it was kind of sad to see it as, I think, one vote out of 12 at the time -- Neu!mann having been the sole Mother Sky voter. Interesting to then see the various positive Can/ "Mother Sky" posts following your post. Not that it's a contest, but right now it's 7 to 18, which is more respectable. I did appreciate Barbu saying something about both. When I do such polls, even with but two options, I do wonder how many are familiar with, or attempt to familiarise themselves with both options reasonably well before voting. "Mother Sky" is quite a long track so I wouldn't expect everyone with youtube access to listen to all of it if they don;t know it, but one can get a good impression by spending some time (say just a few minutes) going through sections of the video to get a feel for it. That said, sometimes people are listening to other music when posting here, and there can be other issues. Personally, I wouldn't vote without trying to familiarise myself with the options if there are few, but some are honest about not doing this (will say, "I only know one, so I vote for that". Polls here have been one of the ways that I've familiarised myself with a wide variety of music. While I don't doubt that some who do know both options would prefer the Rush (like Barbu), while rather messy, and some might think that of the Can, it has become clear to me that some people over the years just vote for "their band" no matter what the specific track or what it's up against, or most always go with the familiar. To me the Can is more assured and groovy, and "By-Tor...", while an important one in the history of Rush feels rather naive (haven't quite found their feet yet). With "Mother Sky" I feel Can has fully "arrived", it's fully realised, whereas for me the Rush one is more like it shows potential. I can love such early attempts when I feel that bands are still finding their way and might show some naivety in a sense. I do like both tracks, but I love "Mother Sky".
That's the kind of comment that makes my day! Glad to hear it. And, by the way, if someone hears that Rush track for the first time and loves it, that would also make me happy. |

Did I? Haven't listened to Mother Sky in a long while but each time I hear it I always have a big stupid smile on my face: A long time ago my roomate invited her new boyfriend for supper in our appartment, 'you will surely like him' she said to me, 'he's a big prog fan'. We talked all things prog for a while and she was right, the dude knew his sh*t really well. One thing she didn't tell me though was that he was a little bit weird and quite intense about it. So, after supper, I put on some Can (soundtracks) and he became strangely excited (during mother sky esp.)...'listen to that, man'..'soo clean'...'hear that guitar tone'..'and that throbbing bass'..'yes, soo very clean' while making circles in the air with his hands...'hear the drums man, the Drums!!'..'everything's sooo perfectly CLEEEAN!!!'. I must admit that I was starting to get a little bit scared. It was a nice evening and a nice chap overall but a bit too fervent for my liking. Since then, each and everytime I give a listen to that album it reminded me of that hilarious little moment. The cleanness of Mother Sky is indeed superior but, for sentimental reasons, I'll stick to the rawness of By-Tor. Haha! Edited by Barbu - December 13 2019 at 12:34 |
