It’s between Caravan, Crimson and Floyd. I’ll give it to More as I’m fairly certain I end up being the lone voter.
After that maybe Yes’ best album at 4th? I’m never sure about these things and honestly find it strange that people are so set in their tastes and rankings almost as if they were making stonetablets on the side

I wouldn't normally vote for Camel when there are the likes of Yes, Genesis and ELP in a poll but this is that exception

Voted Van Der Graff Generator.
Be interesting to see which bands drop out for the 4th album round!

The Yes Album, although Lizard, Three Friends, and Argus did give me pause.

Good poll.

In my opinion, VdGG third (H to He) is much better than Caravan, Genesis and Yes.

In my ranking

1) From H to He is the number one, great masterpiece of rock music (not only prog)

then,

but far,

2) Lizard (KC) , then

3) Caravan and Family (great albums)

then, but far,

4) Yes album

5) Nursery Crime, almost good albums, but not great.

Yes, for me their albums between 1970 and 1971 (From The Least to Pawn Hearts) have no rivals. At most for 1970 there could be Soft Machine III, which however you have not included.

That's a good point about Soft Machine. I should have included them in the poll, bearing in mind I included three other Canterbury Scene bands:- Caravan; Hatfield & the North; & National Health. I could have put them in place of Family, who so far, haven't received any votes at all in any of my Best British Album polls, as far as I'm aware.

I have you to thank for sparking my interest in Van der Graaf Generator and going out and buying my first two VDGG albums in November last year, which I  listened to for the first time on Christmas Day. Smile

Not true, I voted Music in a Dolls House in the first one. To me Family is much greater than Soft Machine. Also, I think there are many other bands too that havenīt got any votes or just a few, just so many great albums there.

I am happy that you think so!

I cant choose between Family and Soft Machine, I like both very much.
Soft Machine in my opinion is the largest Canterbury group, as is Wyatt's Rock Bottom, is in my Top 10. Between 1968 and 1971 Family and Soft Machine are exceptional for me both. I consider them much better than Yes, and EL&P.

I have gone to vote for Family debut, although to be honest I consider the King Crimson debut even more beautiful and important. Anyway, Family are a very underrated group, I have already written the review on all their albums and I believe that Fearless, 1971, is their best progressive album after the debut, and it is a sadness that here on PA it is not among the first 100 and not even in the Top chart of 1971.

I have been wondered, why Family is so underrated these days. It was quite respected of itīs time in the UK, but never make it in the US. I think Family went a lot in the same path as Zeppelin, but they did many things better and also earlier than Zeppelin (I hear lot of Black Dog in Good News Bad News). Still Zeppelin is really respected also these days, but there really are not many specially outside prog who knows Family. Well, Chapmanīs voice has been too much at least some of my friends that I have recommended Family. I like really much three first Soft Machine -albums, but to me 5 first Family albums are absolutely greater! Fearless really is their most prog album, but like all the other Family albums, there are lots of other influences too (folk, hardrock). I think Bandstand is good album too, but there is already feeling their star is setting. Itīs Only Movie is not totally bad album, but their weakest anyway.

I think Traffic is also little bit underrated here and everywhere but Family sure is!!
