Not unpopular at all; anyone with ears can hear that album is a more refined version of the approach used on TMR! Those two are my favorite Beefheart records for a reason. Bellerin' Plain is one of my faves.

Bump because everyone needs some Beefheart in their lives. 

Voted Safe as Milk. It's a lot "easier" than most of his later albums, but it was the first Beefheart I heard and has remained an all-time favourite. I could put it on almost anytime, whereas something like Spotlight Kid or Shiny Beast, while excellent, requires certain mood.

Yes, I think all the band members played a key role in the development f the music, which was quite obviousin the music they put out in that wonderful, magical period.

Shiny Beast swings my hips and melts my heart like few other records.
Doc, Decals, Clear Spot and Mirror Man are close behind.
And TMR=TMI! A bit too much fooling around and not enough beef!

I think all the players in Safe as Milk-Unconditionally and Shiny Beast-Icecream are absolutely fabulous! I believe one reason Moonbeams is the least Beefheart sounding is that musicians of it didn´t understand Beefheart-style at all, although of course Captain tried then to be more commercial. And the band really needed Captain, Mallard is OK band, but far away of the greatness of Beefheart. Also, I think many Beefheart songs are very difficult to play, I think that is said also his guitarist Gary Lucas, in this piece you can see the playing seems to hurt:

Yeah, it wasn't quite 'back in the day' as in the 60's, but it was still in the vinyl era.  I think I may have seen the cover before, but I remember first listening to it thru headphones in the store, and cracking up when the 'fast'n'bulbous' bit came on!  Bought it on the spot.
I think it was the early 80s for me. My dad had a coworker with a fairly complete Zappa vinyl collection- so that’s how I initially became acquainted with early FZ, as my dad borrowed these records and I taped them. Then one day Trout Mask came home with him. I knew of Beefheart only through his appearance on Hot Rats. I was pretty impressed by the weirdness of it all, and the between-song chatter made the album more approachable for me. The actual musicality of the pieces didn’t register as much with me back then - that came much later.

It was Beefheart´s "Electricity" and after that he became Beefheart-fan. Other was Finnish musicmaker Kauko Röyhkä. It was his interview in eighties I heard first time about Beefheart. I think he has some relative, who have had "Lick My Decals" and Kauko said it was really weird album. My interest woke, but that time you can order only "Lick My Decals/Spotlight Kid"-double album, I didn´t want that, so I ordered "Clear Spot". I really liked it already then, but I thought "this not as weird as Kauko describes "Lick". Then one of my friend got boyfriend from "Oulu"-town, where are much more Beefheart-fans than in my little village or nearby town and she bought "Doc at the Radar Station" for his boyfriends recommendation. Really loved it immediately!!

In nineties I met one bandmate in a bus and finally he recorded me "Lick My Decals". He recorded first side of "Trout" in the end of cassette, "Moonlight in Vermont" was the one that hit really hard to me!! Then I got a second hand record seller, who sold me albums once or twice a year. Excellent post! I was going to say, Beefheart had a couple minor semi national hits in the late 60's with some covers, before the Magic Band took over. I didn't realize you were in Finland until you mentioned it!

Safe as Milk is still my favorite, with a young Ry Cooder on lead guitar. A very crazy but accessible album, far better than Trout Mask in my estimation. One of the great albums of the Summer of Love, 1967.... Zig Zag Wanderer, Sure Enough n' Yes I Do, and the theremin-infused Electricity:

My first was Doc. My second was TMR.  I hate to say it but although I kept it in my collection, I cringe every time it comes up in rotation.  It actually caused me to put off adding any others for quite a few years.  For fans of the Captain, I'd highly recommend that you check out the Colonel - Bruce Hampton.  Weird wild stuff.  My third album to try and add to my collection is Safe As Milk, which I put a close second to Doc and TMR last. On a sort of side note, my first Zappa album was Bongo Fury, which of course prominently features the Captain and I really like that one.  Go figure. LOL
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Trout is my biggest fav, but I voted Lick My Decals, because it`s really close to Trout and hasn´t got any votes. Doc, Ice cream & Strictly are my big faves, but I love all Beefheart albums, even Unconditionally & Bluejeans, because Beefheart is one of my really greats!
