I guess it would be like putting together a greatest hits long player:
SIDE 1 - Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer...) - Show Biz Kids - Any Major Dude... - Black Friday - Kid Charlemagne SIDE 2 - Midnite Cruiser - Reelin' in the Years - Your Gold Teeth - Sign In Stranger - Doctor Wu

Unfortunately I don't know their music well enough to make a top ten list.

I think it was... I made a lot of notes when I did my series of reviews of their albums when I added them to the site (which I sadly never finished).
I'd have to double check but I think he did.. he did famously give up the bass after Chuck Rainey bass-shamed him but he more than held his own with the best on the guitar. On that note.. is there really a more underrated guitarist out there than Denny Dias.

Exactly. I believe the second solo in Aja was also played by Becker? At least in their 90s shows, it was he who was playing it.

f**king A man it really was.. and for all the virtuoso guitarists they employed in the studio.. the finest guitar solo perhaps?.. delivered by good old Walter Becker on that one.

Somehow forgot about the title track of Pretzel Logic while making my list. It's maybe the archetypal Steely Dan track. If you had to pick one to represent their oeuvre...the swing-y shuffle, the jazz keyboard to drive the song rather than guitar riffs, the beautiful, magical twists to lead to the chorus, the chord-bending solo, it's got everything you associate with the band.

^ I went for Time Out of Mind off of Gaucho which is not surprising since I have always had a homoerotic love of Michael Mcdonald's voice and it shines on that one..

Of all the Gaucho tracks, My Rival is probably the one most like their Pretzel-Royal Scam era.

No special order.....
Reelin In The Years My Old School King Of The World Rikki Dont Lose That Number Night By Night Dont Take Me Alive Dr Wu Any World Bad Sneakers Aja Been a fan since day one....hard to choose only 10 tracks...I think they were an extremely talented duo with great sidemen...biting incisive satirical lyrics with simply stellar sophisticated pop rock with a healthy tribute to jazz. I have read over the years that other musicians were also big fans. I suppose my avatar name gives it away. ;) Edited by dr wu23 - April 13 2020 at 11:08 |

My Rival! Such an overlooked tune that you won't see on too many favourites lists. It's one of my favourites from Gaucho.
