Merlin-Bard of the Unseen includes the original Merlin plus new compositions. It's the most progressive Kayak album and, for me, the best.

I see Kayak "live" during the Merlin - Bard Of The Unseen" tour in Holland (2 time in Meppel and Assen). It was a fantastic show. And 2 years ago in Verviers (Belgium) for the "Close To The Fire" tour and I'm sure next year to the new forthcoming album "Nostradamus"...Yeahhh!.

Personally i would have Gong for a kayak trip

i can just hear "isle of everywhere" as i kayak gently through the infant Ganges high amidst the peaks of the Himalayas.

OOOOOOH i can just feel myself heading for nirvana now

Wheres that incense?

In answer to Easy Livin:

They are a band that are strong on composition, melody and lyrics.Early albums feature the Mellotron prominently. They went more AOR in the late seventies before disbanding in 1983 but then returning a few years ago.Keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel has played in Camel and technically is at least the equal of many famous prog players like Rick W and Keith E but without the extrovertism.

Musically they are not as 'prog' as Genesis,Yes or ELP.If you want instrumental flourishes then they won't be found in Kayak. But their music (particularly from their early period) has its own richness and beauty. The lyrics often display a level of irony not found in many other prog bands. They are worth devoting some serious attention to IMO.

Thanks Richard,

They do sound interesting. I see from the admittedly limited votes so far "Royal bed bouncer" is the album of choice so far. Is that a good place to start? It sounds like you favour their early output perhaps?.

I like their RBB album a lot! 'Merlin Bard Of The Unseen' is also excellent.Either one is a good starting point. Kayak went the way of a lot of seventies bands and became a little too commercial towards the end of the decade.Even the original 'Merlin' album (1981) was only half good (they 'bottled' out of making it a complete concept work at the time -Bard Of The Unseen is actually the completed work). The DVD for Bard is also one of my favourites.I rate it as high as the Yes -Symphonic DVD !

The first half of Merlin (1980) is progressive greatness. The second half is a let down.

Merlin  (the original) is for me the best kayak album.

even with the very weak b side, it still outclasses the others.

the re-make doesnt have the feel of the old one.

its great too, and the added tracks are weel worth listening, but the original takes me higher

the first 3 albums of kayak are good ones aswell

They are on the pop side of progressive rock. Not essential.

The DVD really brings it to life. The CD on it's own without the audience or visuals lacks something.

Great band. After Focus my most favourite Dutch prog band. More song based than Genesis and Yes, but still worthy of exploring if you like good symphonic rock songs: the compositions are most of the times very good. They didn't really make bad albums in the early days, although I think Phantom Of The Opera is a bit lightweight.

My top 3:

1. See See The Sun

2. Kayak

3. Merlin

Now that I've finally heard three Kayak albums (thanks DP) ... I can confidently vote for the superb See See The Sun ...
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."
