Hi,

PA adds a lot of bands, feels like one a day kind of thing, and I was wanting to make a suggestion ... that any new addition has to have 2 albums worth of music ... so we have a much better idea of what kind of music the band has.

I realize that we are finding, and adding a lot of stuff from 30/40 and 50 years ago that we had not seen or heard, and many of them only have one album ... and honestly, after a while it just is too much and the listening value is diminished.

I appreciate a lot of the entries and many of them only had one album, but the amount of music being added these days, feels like they are just bloating the database and not adding anything worthwhile to the music itself.

Just a thought, no issues if some of you folks don't think it's a good idea ... although I PERSONALLY think it is important that we "grab" the newbies quickly ... but when the music changes the following album to metal or something else ... I have a hard time thinking of these folks as "progressive".

Well we're meant to be the ultimate prog resource so it would seem a bit against that principal if we don't add bands because they haven't released 2 albums. I'm personally more interested in limiting the number of bedroom / bandcamp artists who throw up on the web their latest noodling than an arbitrary rule that would block a bunch of great releases.

Just last year you would have eliminated entries by Lost Crowns, Plastic Dogs & Le Grand Sbam. All worth bands.

You'd also eliminate All Traps On Earth which would frankly be ridiculous.

Many of the one-album prog bands from the classic late-60's and 1970's era happen to be my favourites. Smile

I would really miss the one-album bands. There are so many good ones. It's too bad that so many of them didn't get the opportunity to make more albums.

Besides, with the site advertising itself as the "ultimate resource" and has the term "archives" prominently in its name, by definition, it should strive to be comprehensive. I also wouldn't call the database "bloated," rather it's more similar to a genealogical database: it never has an end.

I'm constantly amazed by just how many artists there are on ProgArchives. I never would have expected to find Miles Davis, Black Sabbath, Kate Bush or David Bowie included here, but I'm really glad they - and many other prog-related artists -  are included. Smile

One album bands are nowhere near as problematic as the hyperproliferative one man projects. 20 albums in a month really doesn't motivate me to even listen to one.

Your last point re changing of styles. We would really benefit from album genre tags over band genre tags. Alas, I really don't see that happening.

If RPI was shorn of all the 'one shot' band releases it would be a considerably diminished sub genre (quantitatively and qualitatively) so no, I don't support the idea.

Hi,

Thanks ... I wanted to hear some thoughts on this ... but the one-a-day recipe seems a bit excessive to me (so to speak), but I agree that they have the right to the chance like everyone else.

As to the one man bands ... well, electronic music for the most part is a one man band ... right? Let's not ask MO about that!
