They've been writing the phenomenon off since his first major injury, prior to the 1998 World Cup ... I say as long this guy stays fit, he'll do the damage ... the main problem he has is that he plays for Real Madrid and Brazil ... competing for places with other titans .. one bad patch could be the end ...

I still expect him to end his career as the record goal scorer in the World Cup Finals (he's got 12 from two, just 2 goals behind Gerd Muller) ... and conclude with a spectacular last hurrah ... as for international goals (56 international goals in 89 matches ... and more to come)

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

1) At this moment I am mostly impressed by Ronaldinho. A few years ago he was more a circus artist but his development is stunning: he still shows his 'out-of-this-earth'' technical abilities but he also is very effective with passing, controlling and scoring, I love to see him smiling !

2) I don't like him as a person but the arrogant and provocative German midfielder Michael Ballack (Bayern Munich is one of the best in the world at this moment, I think he will join Real Madrid next year. By the way, he should have been in the Poll!

3) Yesterday evening I enjoyed the super talents from the 20-year old Rooney during Manchester United against Charlton Athletic on Match Of The Day (BBC TV), this man will be a sensation on the next World Championship in Germany!

4) It's also amazing how many great Dutch players we have at this moment in foreign competitions: Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Robin Van Persie (every week better!) and of course the speedy (but injured) Arjen Robben in the UK and Rafael Van Der Vaart with HSV (Germany), we will see them in during the forthcoming World Championship too  !

5) Ronaldo (one of my favorite players) should play in a decent team, the unbalanced Real Madrid is build-up for commercial activities, not to win prizes with that overkill of technical players!

By the way, no FORZA ITALIA this time from me...

I am probably the only person in the world who would use the fast in relation to Ronaldo-in both senses of the word....

Cristiano Ronaldo, however is definitely one to watch.

I would just like to add my twopenneth about Arjen Robben. He was a sensation in his first season with Chelski but Premiership teams are notoriously slow at figuring players out. This season everyone seems to have his measure and he is a shadow of his self from his debut season.Over-rated.

Ronaldinho is the best player in the world atm, no doubt about that.

Zidane's era as the best is unfortunately over, he's getting too old.

For English players, I'd rather include Lampard and Gerrard in the poll instead of Beckham.

Oh, and it's called football, not soccer

Roy Keane, anyone?!

For about 10 years he was number one in English football , and although he's one of those guys who has too big a mouth, as a player he is/was simply the best defensive midfielder.

Thank you!

From the list I vote for Ronaldo Assis aka Ronaldinho (Barcelona).

Best player ever... hmmmmmm. It is difficult to say. Pelé played together with other genius like Didi, Garrincha, Rivelino, Gérson, Zito, etc. be with Santos F.C. or Brazilian National Team; but obviously he was great. Maradona was great too, but now we know he was using drugs all the time when he was active and the question is "did the dope enhance his playing"? If so, I cut by half his success.

My favourite player was Zico that took (as a leader) my team to be 5 times Brazilian champions and also World Champion beating Liverpool 3-0 in Tokyo (1981). My team is FLAMENGO, from Rio de Janeiro.

Hello Atkingani, can you tell me what's the latest story about Romario? He became very popular playing in Holland with PSV Eindhoven, I have always enjoyed his scoring abilities but he turned out to be a rather narcistic personality (his ex-wife was a shrink I read somewhere, must have been a very steamy relationship), will he ever become president of Brazil?

After the Barcelona vs. Real Madrid of yesterday, I have a new vote: That argentine motherf*cker called Messi will be da very best one day, probably soon. He destructed the Real Madrid with only 18 years old.
And above all, is punk

This summer Messi was the star on the Under 21-World Championship in The Netherlands. The first game he had to start on the bench ( coward of a coach) but then he led (like Diego Maradonna did in 1986 in Mexico) Argentina himself to the World Cup, the Brasilian soccer fans will not be pleased that this incredible talent was not born in Brasil.. ! I feel ashamed that I forget to mention super talent Messi, today the Spanish television (TVE) showed how Messi, as Fantomas mentioned, personally destroyed Real Madrid , even the fanatical Madrid supporters aplauded for Messi and Barcelona .. I hope the referees  will protect him.

Romario is noted by his ex-wives and also the kids he got off marriages. Total: unknown

The matter is that his ex-wives and ex-mistresses are sucking all his money and now he has still to play at the age of 39. He lost his hello, he walks no more with bodyguards and his car is something like a standard Corolla made-in-Brazil. But the fact is that he still manages to make some good plays.

Considering the last presidents we had here it will be no surprise he should be elected!

About Messi... hmmmmmmmmmm I see him like another Ariel Ortega but let's wait.

I'm not old enough to have seen most of those guys play, so my alltime top 10 consists of players from more recent times.

1: Zinedine Zidane
2: Maradona
3: Hristo Stoichkov
4: Paulo Maldini
5: Gary Lineker
6: Lothar Matthäus
7: Thierry Henry
8: Ronaldinho
9: Steven Gerrard
10: Jürgen Klinsmann

Henry, Ronaldinho and Gerrard all have a long career still ahead of them, so they can easily climb a few places on the list

Ah, yes. The heartache I suffered in the Cup Winner's Cup quarterfinals 1996, when my two favourite teams, Brann Bergen and Liverpool, faced each other. Robbie scored one of the greatest goals ever at Brann's home court...

Facing away from the goal about 25 meters out, getting a pass, spinning it up and over the head of the centrehalf using his heel and running around him to score, all of it in a single fluid motion. Even the home fans applauded it.
