Pick your supergroup from members (all lineups) of the big six... ELP, Tull, Floyd, Yes, Genesis and KC. Must choose only one member from each of the big six to be in the supergroup. Consider all musicians are in their prime and pick those who can compose a good song. The band would include two guitars, bass, drums, keys, and vocalist. Assume they would all get along.

Mine would be:

Ian Anderson - Tull, guitar
David Gilmour - Floyd, guitar
Chris Squire - Yes, bass
Bill Bruford - KC, drums
Keith Emerson - ELP, keys
Phil Collins - Genesis, vocals

I'm going to be weird and pick an uncommon group of six. It's actually not too bad, except for the singing.

Mike Rutherford - vocalist
John Evan - keys
Nick Mason - drums
Greg Lake - bass
Peter Banks - guitar
Adrian Belew - guitar

Not sure if this would work, but it would be:

Ian Anderson - Guitar
Adrian Belew - Guitar
Greg Lake - Bass
Nick Mason - Drums
Rick Wakeman - Keys
Peter Gabriel - Vocals

If I could, I would also include a sax player, either David Jackson or that funny guy from Supertramp.
Not for rent. To any God or government.

That a big assumption with six big egos at stake. Smile

None of these musicians were in Jethro Tull or ELP though.

Drums: Barrymore Barlow, Tull.
Rhythm Guitar: Greg Lake, ELP.
Lead Guitar: Steve Hackett, Genesis.
Bass: John Wetton, KC.
Keyboards: Rick Wright, PF.
Vocals: Jon Anderson, Yes.

Bonus Round: Who has played in two of these bands? And who has played in three? Shocked

Does not compute, Bruford/Squire combo required for the future progress of humanity! Lol.

I actually have to THINK now, OP! I'll be back.

Well, since bass and vocals were taken, I guess it's the only one that was left...

Fun idea of an experiment, Grumpy Thumbs Up

My band : Hoovering the Stratosphere

Peter Gabriel (Genesis): Vocals
Ian Anderson (Tull): Shut up and play yer flute (and an acoustic guitar, if you wish)
Robert Fripp: (KC): Guitar and frippertronics
Carl Palmer (ELP): Drums
Chris Squire (Yes): Bass
Rick Wright (PF): Keys

Not easy: I tried different combinations, but each time the PF-member seems to me the weak one (and I love PF!)...

I'm tempted to write Fripp, Bruford, Levin, Belew, which for me still was the best lineup to recond stuff together ever, however there are side conditions... this is hard. Actually it's more of a combinatorial problem because Jethro Tull have to be represented by either Anderson or Barre, but I can't really give Anderson the vocals, and I can't block a guitar place either, so Ian Anderson has to play the flute and I make a band of seven, which gives me some freedom with the other places. Here we are:
Peter Gabriel - Vocals
Ian Anderson - Flute
Robert Fripp - Guitar
David Gilmour - Guitar
Chris Squire  - Bass
Keith Emerson - Keyboards
Bill Bruford - Drums (with a band of seven I can have one person overlap)

Alternative choice
Jon Anderson - Vocals
Martin Barre - Guitar
Steve Hackett - Guitar
Greg Lake - Bass
Rick Wright - Keyboards
Gavin Harrison - Drums
I'd also like to bring Roger Waters in here, as spiritus rector, who can also add sound effects and stuff, some kind of supergroup's Holger Czukay (if Can were allowed...)

Actually the first lineup looks individually better, but I can't really imagine them to come up with a consistent sound. So I'd probably by the album of the second band first. These guys I can imagine to come up with something really nice.

Pretty strict rules! Let's see...

Drums Carl Palmer
Bass Chris Squire
Keys Rick Wright
Guitars Jakko Jakszyk
Guitars Steve Hackett
Vocals Ian Anderson

Even if there is no clash of personalities, I believe all teams need to have "roles" properly filled. You can't have dominant, all-encompassing all-me genius creators i.e. Waters, Emerson and Jon Anderson in one group and expect good results Smile There will be too much overlap, too many ideas, and nobody to actually sit down and put it all together.

Ian Anderson is my driving force. This is the personality of a charismatic leader, demanding of others, but good mannered, bright and devilishly interesting on stage. He's a fantastic composer, plays many instruments, writes lyrics and keeps tabs on all issues regarding the band (artwork, promotion, management etc.).
Steve Hackett is another creator. Chris has attention to detail and great work ethic, Rick provides spacey backgrounds and is sort of "quality control". Jakko is a glue guy, and Carl - another teamworker and specialist.

There is a similar thread I created a while ago if you're interested Smile

That's not fair, you're cheating! Angry LOL

I was also tempted at first to start with the Bruford/Levin combo, but that would leave out any other Yes and KC member (and a band without Chris Squire is difficult to imagine for me)... But, let's give it a try:

Band name: Lower Approximations

Bill Bruford (Yes): Drums
Tony Levin (KC): Bass
Keith Emerson (ELP): Keys
Ian Anderson (Tull): Flute only (well, some acoustic guitar if he insists)
Steve Hackett (Genesis): Guitars
Roger Waters (PF): Vocals (and anything else he can touch upon...)

Hmm... Maybe not as solid as my first proposition...

EDIT: Oh, and if we're breaking rules, my seventh member would be Daevid Allen (then Roger Waters could go bitching again...)

Peter Gabriel (Genesis) - vocals
David Gilmour (PF) - guitar
Martin Barre (Tull) - guitar
Keith Emerson (ELP) - keyboards
Chris Squire (Yes) - bass
Bill Bruford (KC) - drums

Made easier because Bruford was in KC as well as Yes

Some cool lineups. Interesting no one has chosen Yes veterans Alan White, Jon Anderson, or Steve Howe.
