I am going through what can only be described as a total Renaissance-fest.
I am completely and utterly besotted with this often-times overlooked and underappreciated (in my opinion) gem of a band. So how would go you go about placing their top 10 albums in order? An impossible job? Well for me it would be; 1. Scheherazade 2. Live at Carnegie hall 3.Turn of the cards 4. Ashes are burning 5. A song for all seasons 6. Novella 7. Prologue 8. Azure d'or 9. S/T 10. Illusion Thoughts? In all honesty, I could quite possibly put most of those in a completely different order on another day!

I can't conscientiously name 10 Renaissance albums that I love, though they have five or six shining near-masterpieces, but let me give it a go:
1. Novella (one of my favorite and IMHO most under-rated prog albums of the 1970s: "Can You Hear Me?", "The Sisters," and "Touching Once (Is So Hard to Keep)" are three of the finest progressive rock songs of the decade; the other two top notch and engaging. I've often cited "Touching Once" as the quintessential prog epic: a song that exhibits every element of a perfect epic, and which I've extolled as the perfect song to play for someone when they ask, "What do you mean by 'prog epic'? Play me a 'prog epic.'") 2. Turn of the Cards (containing two 10/10 prog epics and a collection of other highly-crafted songs.) 3. Carnegie Hall (great performances/renderings of some great songs--and I don't usually like live albums.) 4. Scheherazade (containing my favorite R song of all: "Trip to the Fair" and the excellent symphonic title suite; two sub-par songs.) 5. Ashes Are Burning (containing another R favorite: "At the Harbour," the great title song, and the better "Can You Understand?") 6. Prologue (opening with the stunning title song, shows a "band not yet found its bearings" the rest of the way) Edited by BrufordFreak - January 18 2021 at 17:53 |

I tend to prefer the rawness of the first line-up and the intermediary MK1.5 (see the TV Broadcast on DVD) to the ultra-slick Haslam albums. It's also why I prefer Prologue top the rext of the Haslam albums, precisely because it is rawer and more psychedelic.

I just realised your Top 10 is identical to mine. That can't be a coincidence. What are the odds?

I really dig the first Renaissance album - fuzzy prog classic.
- Renaissance - Prologue - Ashes - Scheherazade - Cards These are essential - the core of my Renaissance collection along with Carnegie Hall and the King Biscuit live LPs. |

Number one is Novella as it was my first contact with Renaissance and immediate love. The order of the rest isn't fixed and may change on a daily basis. There is nine as I'm not so much acquainted with Live at Carnegie Hall and not so much interested in later period. Azure d'or is my last stop, which I still enjoy very much. 1. Novella2. Prologue 3. Scheherezade 4. Turn of the cards 5. Ashes are burning 6. Renaissance 7. Songs for all seasons 8. Illusion 9. Azure d'or
