Today is a far more serious offering than usual from PABT, because it has to act as an obituary of one of our finest instead of a birthday celebration, and there will be more than a few readers of this who might remember the artist and band, but might not be aware of today’s subject passing, simply because they were either not on the site, or because they missed the relevant post passing on the sad news.

Paul Macd, Paul MacDonnell joined the forum on 5th June 2010, and only hung around for a short while. He would have celebrated his 68th birthday today in England. Paul posted in response to a thread which attracted a fair bit of interest on the forum, and rightly so, that being this one http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=50945 in which a member of the faithful asked if anyone had ever heard of a band by the name of Automatic Fine Tuning, and there were many responses, all of them favourable, with good reason as we shall find out later. Paul was a guitarist with the band and posted on page two of this thread when he replied to a post from his old mucker in Glider, the forerunner of AFT, Trevor Darks. Steve Lusted had posted the sad news that another band member, Bob Cross, had passed away. Paul did invite some questions with his email address, and did respond to Tony Clarke, ClarkePegasus4001, who kept the thread going for a while, and informed us all on 7 October 2016 that Paul had passed away from an alcohol related illness. As one member commented, the thread showed PA at its best, as a repository of knowledge about prog rock, and an institution in which people can learn about its history and the people who make this the finest genre of music in the world, without any question or competition. There is a reason we are so obsessed, and it is wholly a beautiful reason, in spite of some of the arguments we might have here.

So, who were AFT? Well, here is their entry on PA. AUTOMATIC FINE TUNING discography and reviews Dean, amongst others, had posted that he remembered seeing them live, and they released just the one album, which received some mixed reviews on the site, but really enjoyed by those who rated them highly. Here is a fantastic archival site from the legendary Friars of Aylesbury showing the band playing live there in January 1977 Welcome to the Friars Aylesbury website

I am afraid that there is not a great deal online about Paul, but here is an interesting and amusing Maidenhead newspaper article showing him as a judge in a “Battle of the Bands” school competition Battle of the Bands held at Charters School - Maidenhead Advertiser

So, let us have a listen to the band, this from YouTube; https://youtu.be/BBlc67lGT9c Pretty damned good stuff to these ears, and you can see why they were regarded well enough to play at Reading Festival in 1976, which was then, by a long way, the biggest music festival in Britain, and a haven for metal and prog fans until it decided to go over to the dark side. You can, by the way, still get the album, certainly on Amazon, so go for it.

Rest in peace, Paul. Let’s hope you are having a wonderful day up there.

Elsewhere, no current collab news to report.

It has been a long eight hour day for Mr Laz in the garden today, taking advantage of a rare unbroken sunshine day in West Wales to plant his pots, dig his borders, and clear his brambles. This has not, I am afraid, left a great deal of time for today’s PABT, but I did want to share with you an extraordinary website created by a departed brother of ours.

kosmischekurier joined our spaced out throng in March 2009, and stayed with us until the following August. His interests, as will soon be set out clearly, are space rock and Krautrock. When he joined, he gave us all notice of the website he was setting up, which did attract the attention of a number of our beloved brethren. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=56694

And here is said website, dedicated to all things Kosmische Welt, or Cosmic World according to that lovely algorithm at Mr Googly. Kosmische Welt And what a feast of information he has here. I cannot see that it has been updated in a little while, but it does, heroically, include a link to our Hallowed Temple, and is just utterly fantastic, and well worth spending a little bit of time on if you are into this type of prog.

Matthew Wade celebrates his 45th birthday in Newcastle, that heroic bedrock of all things Geordie in Blightyland. Matthew is an environmental engineer, and is, in fact, a civil servant working at Department of Health and Social Care, and is a wee bit of an expert in wastewater (effluent to you and I) treatment, which surely must qualify him for a job at one of our many legendary waste management firms featured thus far on PABT if the call comes. Here he is, with an impressive list of research stuff Matthew WADE | Lead Analyst | Environmental & Ecological Engineering | Department of Health and Social Care

And for those of you who are super fans of The Ozrics, as is our hero, you will be impressed by his music collection on Bandcramp cosmicspacepig's collection | Bandcamp

What a shame he didn’t stick with us, but it doesn’t stop us from wishing our dearly beloved brother a very happy birthday! Howay The Lads, as they are wont to say on Tyneside.

Elsewhere in Proggerland, we wish a very happy 23rd birthday to Larkstongue41. Hubert has been active on the site since July 2015. Happy birthday sir!

If you really want to make a name for yourself in the seething pit we call The PA Forum, then register and as your first ever act ask the deliberating masses what, precisely, was the first ever progressive rock album, and then don’t bother   to provide said masses with your opinion on the subject.

Who did actually make the first prog record is a question for which there is simply no answer, rather like asking what God’s dress size is. Nobody knows, although I personally go along with Bing Crosby’s Star Dust from 1940, anticipating The Flower Kings by some 50 years.

The thread started by today’s Birthday Hero is notable for producing in response a classic Wallace post, so utterly typical of this legend, it deserves to be reproduced in full here;

“We jist been thru this awl a month ago.

Why do these threids always ha' tae be feckin' "Best of",

"Worst of", "history of"?

Evray time a new newbie cum here, do we have tae reguritates awl this?

Is tha our purpose here -tae serve the 'opelessly lost newbie? (Thars eneugh VETERAN newbies on dis site as it is!)

Yosh sayit , that makes fer a varra dull board.

Yosh sayit, bollard-newbies are an impediment tae progress an' usefule assa spare prick at a' wedding.

Yosh sayit, whene'er a new newbie cums oop wiv one o' these warld-shakin' posts -ignare it.

Ortherwise thissen board stagnates.”.

Folks, there are some passages which no amount of artificial intelligence can translate, no matter how clever the algorithm, and that is one of them. There is, BTW, quite a bit more of this in that thread. Read this and enjoy, or weep depending upon your constitution http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3493

Fr3dMc joined the prog savouring throng in February 2005, and stayed with us for a whole six weeks before disappearing into the digital ether. Rock Sobeck, which is one hell of a titanic name to contend with, and it is his real name, celebrates his 38th birthday in the Home of the Brave this very day. When he registered, he provided his occupation as car sales and his interests as “music, cars, women.......nuff said”.

So, when I started researching Rock, I was expecting a cool, handsome, drop dead f**kable hunk. I mean, you would, wouldn’t you?

Rock hails from Vancouver, but not that cesspit of culture in Canada, but the rather more sober state of Washington. It is, apparently, the largest suburb of Portland, Oregon. Here is its website, within which there are many suburban delights, including the altogether thrilling news that the city has set up Arbor Month which has recognised Urban Yoof Program celebrating trees, and the latest updates on the waste provider, the extremely sexy Vancouver Solid Waste Services! City of Vancouver Home | City of Vancouver Washington

Rock is into car sales, and here is his JoinedTogetherLimbs site where you can all feast your eyes upon this hunk Rock Sobeck - Sales Manager - Dick Hannah Dealerships | LinkedIn As you can see, Rock has climbed the corporate gas guzzler ladder from a mere Sales Associate to a Sales Manager at Dick Hannah Dealerships. And, really, with the mission statement of said dealership stated as

“Family. Integrity. Respect. Purpose.

These four simple words, our core values, are the guiding principals of our business. Family-owned since 1949, Dick Hannah Dealerships has grown to become one of the most well respected and trusted automobile companies in the region.”

why on Earth would you buy a car anywhere else? Guys, get yourself up to Vancouver as soon as you can, and to help you in your choice of vehicle in which to woo your female opposite sex personage in the same vein as the chap who will flog you your car, here is their website New Car Dealers & Used Car Dealers | Portland, OR Metro Area Yep. They go the extra mile, so you don’t have to! And, don’t forget, Dick Always Says Yes. Feast your eyes upon this veritable cornucopia of car sales personages, including our departed brother Meet the Team at Dick Says Yes in Vancouver, WA And of any of you ever get sick and tired of writing prog album reviews, well you can write your very own review of a Dick Car Dick Says Yes Reviews - VANCOUVER, WA | Cars.com

Our Rock also plays on the stock market, and you can read here his wonderfully concise views on tits up in said market Rock Sobeck (@Fr3dMc) | Stocktwits and here Comments by Rock Sobeck  These days, Our Rock has eschewed his shagging on top of the bonnet days, and is an Apple Pie family man. Take a look at his wonderful family on SadderBook Rock Sobeck | Facebook In addition, Rock has a GoggleTube site, where he has, until now, attracted a mere one subscriber to his cultural joyfest, although I am confident this will change as soon as the prog masses click on this link https://youtube.com/user/fr3dmc

So! We wish an extremely happy birthday to Rock! Come back, sir! We need to know our motor industry stock news from an expert!

It could, of course, have been Jason Donovan, but Kylie has to trump him every time. Ahhh, Kylie. Pop Princess, whose great great grandfather was, of course, responsible for originally brewing Fosters Lager from dingo piss on the plantation.

Today on The PABT, we are taking a trip to the movies. Yep, that’s right, the wonderful world of cinema, and an inauguration into our Temple of Everlasting Fame for a chap who is responsible for some of that wonderful cinematography that we all love so much.

Firstly, let us pay musical homage to the film world https://youtu.be/vB08hqjJnPo Ah, hugging with your baby! That is an absolute classic, and, indeed, rejected for Symphonic Motown by Ivan following a truly historic suggestion by Svetonio. We do not always get it right, friends!

angelko1958 joined our cultural throng on 19th April 2009, and carried on visiting us until December 2010, but did not, I am afraid, delight us with any of his thoughts on the artistic merits of Prog videos, films starring our beloved heroes, or, indeed, anything. Angelo Sartore celebrates his 63rd birthday in that wonderful haven of descendants of British convicts, Melbourne, Australia. Before we consider the affairs of our lensman, let us discuss this city. Melbourne is the capital city of the state of Victoria in Convictland, situated on the South East coast of that land. Melbourne is, you will be relieved to know, now open following an extended lurgy lockdown. Residents of this lovely city will, no doubt, be queuing up to apply for a Lord Mayor’s Commendation for their business as we speak, and, in an indication of just how far liberal society extends these days, the very first thing you can choose to do on the city’s ever so helpful website (“I Want To”) is to pay your parking fine, or view said fine should you be of a mind to consider paying it. Thankfully, you can also book a hard waste collection here, bearing in mind, though, that The City of Melbourne offers a hard waste collection for residents only. Individual households can book one collection service of one cubic metre per year. Never let it be said that this thread does not provide a public service. http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/Pages/home.aspx

So what of our dearly departed brother, Angelo? When he registered, he didn’t provide anything at all to allow us to take an interest in his persona. No occupation, no interests, no signature. Absolutely diddly squat.

Well, he is actually an interesting chap. He is a cameraman in that hotbed of popular culture, filmmaking, and has quite an impressive list of credits to his name as an Assistant Cameraman. That Bible of all things movies, IMDB, lists his credits Angelo Sartore - IMDb Amongst his credits is a short film starring Peter Hardy (no relation to Ollie), Chasing Rabbits, featuring as its co-stars those wonderful bunnies who make a delicious stew, and at 16 minutes in, a truly emotional breakdown on the part of the lead. Here it is, rated 9.3 on IMDB, albeit with only 9 ratings, including Bigwig and Hazel obviously, and a grand total of 110 views on GoggleTube https://youtu.be/ExmX6RqlGCo

As his day, job, Angelo is company principal of Precision Camera Service, specialising in the repair of Sachtler & Oconnor fluid heads & tripods, and I can wholly recommend these goods to all of you budding Stanley Kubrick’s out there in Proggerland. Here is his LinkedArms site https://au.linkedin.com/in/angelo-sartore-407b1399 and here is said firm’s SadBook page, where you can learn all sorts of vital issues such as a Grip's dolly monitor powering system, very handy if you are going out to film Shaun The Sheep as opposed to Mr Bunny. Precision Camera Service - Home | Facebook

Angelo also appears on that august institution, British Film Institute Angelo Sartore | BFI and if you wish to hire him, and why the devil would you not, get yourselves over to that hotbed of hiring, Yumpu ANGELO SARTORE - Freelancers Promotions

So! We say G’Day and Bonza Birthday to our bunny loving brother! Can we have Kylie’s autograph, please?

Elsewhere, we have no current collabs to report, but they will be back!

(EDIT-AGAIN) and whilst I am able to speak a little bit of Welsh owing to living here for 22 years (albeit very poorly) and pigeon Italian, that is the sum of it.

In spite of some of the jokes I make, I seriously do ardently admire the many people on this forum who are able to converse in multiple languages, especially those who write fine reviews in English when it is not their mother tongue. I know I could never manage it.
I whole heartily agree. Coming from a bilingual country and only speaking one language is one of the few regrets I have.

I also love your expression "pigeon Italian". In Canada we sometimes say "I know kitchen french", meaning not a helluva lot.

Thanks JD. For once, this was not one of my witticisms. There is actually an interesting story behind my relative ignorance of Latin. In Britain when I grew up, but not widely now, there was a split between state grammar schools where Latin and classics were taught, and state secondary modern schools, where people such as I went who failed the entrance exams (11 plus). There, the focus was more on traditional working class education for trades and etc. These days, most children go to comprehensive schools, mixed sex and a culmination of the vision of 60’s socialist governments advocating quality education for all (whether they deliver on this is a debate for another thread, this is merely the theory).

My interest in the classics, which remains to this day, was actually sparked by watching and then reading Graves’ I Claudius, and I can compete with the best now as regards Roman History. My language skills, however, remain to this day terrible. French was the only formal exam I failed at school, and whilst I am able to speak a little bit of Welsh owing to living here for 22 years (albeit very poorly) and pigeon Italian, that is the sum of it. When I translate, I either make a joke out of it, as I do frequently here on this thread, or rely on Googly Translate, which is not always wholly reliable.

In spite of some of the jokes I make, I seriously do ardently admire the many people on this forum who are able to converse in multiple languages, especially those who write fine reviews in English when it is not their mother tongue. I know I could never manage it.

Well all I can say is that today, I dropped lucky. After a particularly long and hectic day at work, the thought of spending too much time researching today’s inauguration hero into PABT was not filling me with my usual state of glee. However, the very first candidate eyeballed was simply so crucial to our pantheon, that he stood out a mile, and we have Svetonio to thank as well! Yes, this is an extraordinarily exciting moment. The very first official appearance in our little thread for the revolutionary hero from Serbia, a man who has been banned from more forums than I have been from boozers for drunken behaviour, and whose only outlet is now sharing a desolate space with that other Class A Nutcase (CAN), Mr Wallace.

How did this come about?

Today’s hero first registered with the site as schroedingerscat in December 2009, out of work, and out of ideas to share with the masses.

He then registered on the site as IainHawk in December 2010, when he described himself again as a bit of a loafer, i.e. unemployed, and made reference to his Hawkwind affections.

Then, on Christmas Day 2019, obviously with nothing better to do on that holy day, LordHawk joined our Christmas Pudding Throng, for the third time of asking. He stayed for just short of three months, without, I am afraid, sharing any of his thoughts with the masses.

All of this is a little bit of a shame, because Iain Hawk, who celebrates his 55th birthday in Krautland today, is obviously a man of culture and talent.

When he registered for the third time, his signature was suitably academic and philosophical for a creature of Rhineland, it being the following; “Ars Longa Vita Brevis”. Now this translates into Anglespeak as life is short, and is in itself a translation of the original Greek, and quotes the original two lines of The Aphorismi by that wonderful Doctor Quack, Dr Hippocrates. Yes indeedy folks, culture does exist beyond the swamps of Germany, you know! Those philistines among you might be shouting at Mr Laz by now to tell me that our wonderfully clever brother was, in fact, quoting the title of the second album by those progressive pioneers, The Nice, but that would, in my opinion, be to denigrate our brother.

Anyhoo, how does Svetonio come into this story? Well, take a look see at number 2,522 of the 20,445 band addition suggestions that our glorious Tito loving brother (TIT for short) made all the way back in 2014; Schroedinger's Cat (Germany) for Psych / Space - Progressive Rock Music Forum Now, our very wise and prolific collab, Uwe “Rivertree”, was ever so slightly sceptical of this suggestion, and why would he not be? However! The artistic outlet of our dearly departed brother Iain was indicted into the Pantheon of Prog. Here is his page SCHROEDINGER'S CAT discography and reviews

By the way, this thread does also provide you with quantum learning as well as culture, and I know that all of you are extremely eager to learn why Mr Schroedinger was so fond of his pussy. Well, it is not, I am afraid, a reference to Ms Shroedinger’s foo foo, but is explained here extremely satisfactorily in the WikiOrgasm page Schrödinger's cat - Wikipedia There are people who get very excited by interpretations of quantum mechanics. I am not one of them, sadly.

Mr Hawk’s real name is, in fact, Sebastian Khan, not nearly as exciting or academic as Iain Hawk, so one can forgive the pseudonym I suppose. Or, of course, this extrapolation of different names could be what is commonly referred to by scientific pointy heads as a quark measurement problem. But, is his psych/space rock, which so excited our Serbian friend, any good? Well, you will have noted by now that his ten million albums have attracted a veritable vacuum of ratings, let alone reviews. This really must be addressed, so let us have a visit in real space time continuum to his Bandycramp page; Music | Schroedinger's Cat I have had a listen to a couple of tracks from Dark Matter. Flying around Yraal weighs in at over 40 minutes, which rather makes IQ look like a bunch of lazy slackers. It really isn’t that bad at all, and certainly should attract a little bit more interest from the prog masses than it has. He has been going for 30 years now, which is a long time, and his SadSpace page is included here for completeness Schroedinger's Cat - Posts | Facebook

So! We wish a very spaced out birthday to our glorious hero! Don’t let that pussy suffer, sir! Keep it medically moist!

Elsewhere in Proggerland, it is another day of heroic excitement, for we wish our exceptional SC, TCat, or Mike as his parents named him 60 years ago today in Canadaland, a very happy birthday.  Mike is prolific and extremely wise in these parts, so have a great day sir!
